r3' gets facelift
The Goderich Public Library is gilttingla facelift -for
the first time since it was built 79 yearsago.' ,
While a new roof was put on the town -owned library
a few years ago, no other upgrading of the existing
building had ever been undertaken uhtih several
weeks ago when work began on the exterior. the clay
brick building was erected in 1904 with Carnegie
funds.
Ken Hunter, Commissioner of Works, says the town
has budgetedover a two-year period to complete
work on both the inside and outside of the library. A
Wintario grant has been received for, about a third of
the $54,000 estimated cont of the project and the
Canada -Ontario Employment Development program
is paying the labor for the butside work which should
'be completed by the end of October.
This outside work includes replacing all the window
sills and broken bricks' as well as installing new
eavestroughitg, fascia and soffits. Hunter explains
that, over the years, water has gotten into the sand
stone sills and frozen, causing the sills to break up
and become just like beach sand. These sills are be-
ing replaced by new concrete ones and Hunter says
there is no noticeable difference between the two. -
Work on the library's interior will begin early next
year and will include electrical upgrading, painting
and carpeting.
. The library remains open to the public during both
the inside and outside work.
OPP ask for public's assistance
Cattle thefts in this district are a concern and the
Ontario Provincial Police are requesting your
assistance in helping solve the problem. •
Recently, a total of 87 head of beef cattle have been
stolen from an area of the district which encom-
passes Owen Sound on the north to Exeter and Strat-
ford on the south. Additional thefts have been
reported in the London area.
The stolen cattle, either Hereford or
Hereford/Charlois cross, have..a weight of 800-1,200
pounds and have been stolen in lots ranging from six
to 18 at a time.
All thefts have occurred in the early tourk and have
been completed by daybreak. One investigation
following a theft revealed neighbours had heard a
truck during the early hours but as they did not
realize a theft was taking place, failed to notify the
police. ,
