Er GODERICH 524®92®1 Southwest€rn Ofltal jo Youth Talent Search finalists will perform The 1$ finalists in the 1983 Southwestern Ontario Youth Talent Search will perform centre -stage for the judges i and fair audience at the grandstand on Sunday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. The young contestants, drawn from preliminary competitions held in London and at fairs in Aylmer, Dresden, Elmira, St. Marys and :Woodstock, the Central Ontario Exhibition in Kit- cheiler and Exeter Heritage Days are the finalists from close to 300 original entries 'in.the third annual "search" co-sponsored by T.V. London and the Western Fair. Quarter and semi-final competitions at Stage 10 dur- ing the Western Fair will narrow the field to the top 12. They will compete for a first - prize of $500 cash, a scholar- ship in the Dale Carnegie course in leadership and ef- fective communication, and an expense -paid trip to Memphis, Tennessee, to compete in Youth Talent In- ternational— the world's big est amateur talent contest. in ,the international 'contest total $12,500 (U.S.) and the winner is guaranteed an audition with CBS televi- sion's top casting 'corr mit- tee. The runner-up act in Lon- don wins $250, and upon the judges' recommendation, will also be invited to par- ticipate in the Memphis con- test, which draws from an estimated 15,000 contestants representing fairs across the United States as well as the Western Fair and Calgary Exhibition and Stampede in Canada, The Southweern Ontario Youth Talent Search, design- ed to discover, develop and encourage talented young singers, dancers, musicians and variety performers, has already achieved interna- : tional status. Last year's winner, Jamie Warren, placed second in Memphis, and is well on his way to establishing a career as a professional entertainer. The 22 -year-old singer/composer/musician from Hanover, Ontario, has been performing during the summer at Libertyland amusement park in Mem- phis, and his debut recor- ding, "World of a Child" is receiving air -play on radio stations across Ontario. Jamie will return to the Western Fair grandstand to perform once again for Lon- don audiences during the talent show finals, along with featured guest Peter Marshall, host of television's "Hollywood Squares" and "Fantasy". All grandstand shows are free to fairgoers during the 1983 Western Fair, included with gate admission. Variety entertainment featured at free grandstand Daily, Monday _ through Friday, September 12 to 16 at 2 p.m. Western Fair au- diences will be treated to nearly two hours of first- class variety entertainment at the free grandstand. The featured acts include "Wildflower", a totally feminine, entertaining and energy -packed trio of singers and musicians from Las Vegas. Their contagious enthusiasm expounds on stage with dynamic ver- satility in numbers ranging from country hoedowns to sultry ballads, displaying vocal talents and musical ex- pertise on guitar, banjo, bass, steel guitar, piano, harmonica and fiddle. 'The Paul Brothers and Shirley mix music and com- edy in a side-splitting presentation that has delighted audiences across Canada. The 20 -minute costumed comedy routine is proof again that the "good old days of vaudeville" are alive and welk 4, The Volante `-- Don Thompson and Scott Beldin — are one of the most astonishing acts ever seen at Western Fair. Their dazzling skills at unicycle -riding and knack for spontaneous hilarity create a blend of sparkling entertainment to appeal to fairgoers of all ages. The lively dance routines of the Slewfoot Cloggers will keep toes a -tapping and hands a -clapping, and the ir- repressible "Aunt Myrtle" combines country comedy with her emcee duties to round -out the 75 -minute matinee performances. As a prelude to each show, Dan Hurld, showman ex- traordinaire and one of the continent's foremost agricultural experts, will deliver a lively commentary as hitch teams of heavy horses and some of western Ontario's champion livestock parade on the racetrack. Fair audiences will be treated to an impressive display of flashing harness and glistening coats while they view the rare spectacle of four tons of horseflesh move in absolute precision. The heavy horse exhibition drive and livestock parade are sure to stimulate awareness and appreciation — especially for city -dwellers -- of the major role agriculture plays in today's world. Shows at 2 p.m. each day Monday, September 12 to Friday, September 16 are free to fairgoers. Car, vouchers are gate awards Western Fair gate awards take a practical approach in 1983. On each of the- first nine days, a fortunate fair visitor will be`therrecipient of $1,000 in. -gtoce.ry - vouchers, redeemable at A & P Food Stores throughout Ontario. On the final day of the fair, Sunday, September 18, a 1983 Pontiac Acadian automobile will be given away. The five - door hatchback comes equipped with a 1.6 litre engine, rear window defroster, body side mouldings, AM radio, automatic transmission and whitewall tires. Pre -delivery inspection and warranty is provided by London Motor Products.
