They brought crayon drawings they had made for the residents and sang a few songs. Before their second visit, the children were given the choice of going to the beach or going to the Manor. They chose the Manor and should all be commended for their thoughtfulness. Cathy Wiebe, the Activity Director, was on holidays for the last week of July and the first week of August and the residents really missed her - especially Clarence Salisbury who counted the days 'until her return. I know there were a lot of pleasures packed into that big weekend especially. 'Tho, I'M not on "holidays", I managed to cram in a good many things and places in those last few days too. Like spending a whole afternoon, after a nice lunch with a friend, just roaming around, ,in and out of stores, 'round and around the flea market. I even picked up a wire brush after giving up the frustration of looking for my own! It's amazing how many things you cart home after not needing anything. I'll probably still "not need" them, but it was fun deciding (changing my mind) and splurging a little bit. I know friend Ruthie en- joyed the day too and I ex- pect she was just as beat as I was when the day ended. Usually on this holiday, my niece and hubby -and it used to be children -came for the long weekend. A chance for Ernie to be free to watch the ball tournament here. He hasn't missed one in many, many years and Walt en- joyed going with him. They spent the three days at the games, then Ernie had to dash back for the work days. This year, they couldn't make it. The children are now grown and getting ready for college and high school had taken up a lot of time - and money, I expect -so we really missed them. Walt decided Saturday to o alone to the tournament, o I took him over and "pick me up at five" settled THAT. Even then, I couldn't fall asleep. So, I think I did the only sensible thing a person should do at this time -I RESTED for 15 minutes (horizontal) and when still not sleepy, I got up and attacked whatever it was that was on my mind. Can't recall what it was -but as the dawn showed, it began to rain, so I put away ,the swing things and puttered around in that - beautiful dawn. "Why don't we do this more often" -was usually about the last song of the evening, after we had touched on all the lovely old songs -some more than once. I wonder what the young folk would sing now? Unless they had parents who loved all the oldies, I doubt if they could get the same satisfaction out of the evening. Harmony, laughter and love for your friends cuts down on the drinking, arguing and loud talk -oh -a stereo should not be allowed- -definitely NOT at these gatherings. They're usually just screaming. I suppose it because we have a lot of fun and happy memories to look back on. Drinking never interested me. I could have fun without it and I never missed a dance. LOVED to dancei How did I dolt! Anyway, they were happy times and some were great conversation pieces, especially when two or three started re -telling them. They became the greatest stories you ever heard but always there was friendship there and I enjoy recalling them, too. They help fill up id' those empty brain "cells" -that could easily be filled ,with something not as nice. So, enjoy each day, call a friend, help someone in some way --especially spare a dollar for all these rotten diseases that need fighting. Love, Martha. HOLMESVILLE feel just GREAT the rest of the week. I hope. This kind of erratic action usually strikes 'you after you're past the magic age of 40. Up to that time, you can do a lot of screwy things - after that, they just get WORSE. You can't believe the things you do, the rules you break and the new habits you form -and you're EN- JOYING it!
