Professional examinations
important for children
The Ontario Association of
Optometrists in keeping with
its program of promoting
preventive vision care
recommends that parents in-
clude a professional vision
examination aspart of their
children's overall health
maintenance program.
Vision is one of your
baby's most precious senses,
contributing 80 percent of
what they learn.
At birth your child's eyes
will probably be examined
for signs of congenital eye
problems. Though rare this
is important since early
diagnosis often makes treat-
ment more efficient.
Fprther tests will also be
done to investigate for cross-
ed eyes, lazy eye and pro-
blems with eye movement
control, focusing control,
coordination and teamwork
of the two eyes.
Remember says Dr. Mit-
telman that, "If a child
perceives his world with con-
fusion, bewilderment, and
distortion, learning will be
difficult. It is easy to see how
that frustration of not seeing
well can have a significant
effect on your children's
development."
