BY THE REVEREND
ROBERT a BALL,
NORTH ST. UNITED
CHURCH
I was trying my best to
sleep in. After all, it seemed
the only right thing to do on
the last day on one's vaca-
M Nir'S-'iriR°S STUDY
tion. But sleep I could not. It
has been the perfect summer
for vacationing by a lake,
with no agenda, or things
that Must be done. A lazy
time. The kind of ,life one
:could get used to, I suspect, ..,
But i must come to an end
for now. It's back to work. In
the anticipation, I began to
think of the multitude of
things I must do right away.
Then, the things I would like
to do, if time permitted, and
the things I shall be expected
to do, and so on ... until I
became anxious and con-
cerned before I had even
started. No wonder I just
wanted to return to sleep.
In reality, I know that the
work of the Church and the
responsibilities I shall have
will fall into place, and, with
the help of so many others,
the coming agenda will be
covered, one atep,at.a time.
Surely: ,that is the 'key ..
one step at a time. It's the
same kind of principle that
one can apply to one's own
spiritual pilgrimage. As St.
Paul would put it ... "I do not
claim 'that I have already
become perfect. I keep striv-
ing to win the prize for which
Christ Jesus has already
won me to himself."
The Christian life, is not so
much a happening, as it is a
journey. None of us is
spiritually mature. We simp-
ly look to that ideal of our
humanity which is Jesus, as
well as to the example of
Christian saints in our own
experience; and we work ojit
God's perfecting of our own
lives. We begin by taking on
the challenge of growth in
overcoming specific things
... our fears, our habits, our
prejudices, our angers ... all
those .;things which fall short
of 'God's glory in us. Alid we
do it one step at a time.
It can be done. For you
have seen the victory of
Christ in others, even as I
have. They have no special
powers or secrets, other than
accepting God's love, and
living out that love within
their community of faith -and
worship, as servants and
disciples of our one Lord.
You too can share that vic-
tory,, and be a part of that
great cloud of witnesses.
