It cost $450 so ought to be first class. 50 YEARS AGO At Toronto Exhibition this week, competing against the best '',Class 'B' amateur riders of Canada and the United States, Bill Lumby Jr. of Goderich, rode his motorcycle to a sensational i victory in the five -mile -mile event. Paid attendance hit a new high -7,165 --at the fair which wound up Saturday night with a display of fireworks. The Goderich Police Commission has filed a lengthy list of charges against Police Chief F.M. (Monty) Hall who refused to resign by the 2 p.m. Wednesday deadline set earlier by the commission. Most of the nearly 20 charges levelled against the chief are based on complaints presented to the commission last Friday. The long - smouldering police situation blew wide-open when the commission requested the resignations of the chief and Constable Albert South, the two remaining members of the town's five -man force. The top prize in the Beautiful Gardens Contest of Goderich has been won by Mrs. E.J. Pridham of 134 St. George's Crescent. 5 YEARS AGO The Ontario Ministry of Health will give a special grant to Alexandra Marine and General Hospital to assist the board to make up the total financial deficit discovered earlier this summer. Board members met Wednesday evening to discuss conditions of the one- time grant which amounts to $140,575. Legion Branch 109 president, Roy Mugford and U. -Col. D.V. Currie, V.C. Sergeant at AA�rmes House of Commons, Ottawa, unveiled a plaque dedicating a Sherman tank at the Huron County Pioneer Museum on Sunday. The Huron County Board of Education has finally become invovled in a firey issue surrounding three English literature books being used in the five county high schools and decided Monday night to ban one of the three books --The Diviners by Margaret Laurence -from use in the Huron County classrooms.
