Praise of self is no praise
Dear Editor,
Your edition of August 10
carried a quarter page arti-
cle entitled, "Salvation Ar-
my brings hope to the
hopeless", which was sub-
mitted by the Salvation Ar-
my. This brings to my mind
the old saying: "Praise of
self is no praise at all.
Quoting from the article:
"Yet still their enthusiasm
and their unflagging com-
mitment to the cause of
Christ, who commissioned
his emmissaries with the
directive, "Go ye,"..."That
commitment is found at Mat-
thew 28:19,20: "Go therefore
and make disciples of all na-
tions, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to
observe all the things I have
commanded you..." The
record of the apostles
ministry in the Bible book of
Acts shows that they obeyed
this command. Jesus also in-
structed his followers
respecting the "Lord's sup-
per", the final meal he ate
with his disciples to
memorialize his death:
"Keep doing this in remem-
brance of me." These two
things, baptism and the
"Lord's supper," have a
wealth of symbolic meaning
for Christians, and Jesus put
true Christians under obliga-
tion to observe them. - Mat-
thew 28:19; Luke 22:19.
The Salvation Army holds
that "baptism and the Lord's
supper are not essential to
the soul's salvation, and it
does not observe them."
Does this sound like "unflag-
ging commitment to the
cause of Christ"?
This is just ONE feature
wherein the Salvation Army
does not measure up to
Scriptural requirements,
regardless of their "social
service."

Looking for Holmes
Dear Editor,
I am interested in obtain-
ing information about a
family named Holmes, that
settled in the Goderich area
in 1832 or 1833.
My great -great grand-
father and his family travell-
ed, by ox team and wagon,
from Dundas to Stratford
where they took up their first
homestead. The Holmes
family, that was travelling
with them, decided to keep
on towards Goderich.
Perhaps there is someone
who has done, or is in charge
of a Holmes family tree, or
indeed anyone with any in-
formation concerning these
folks.
If so, would they please
write, Mrs. E. Lancaster, 67
Salem Grove, London, N6K
1T9.
Many thanks,
(Mrs.) Elizabeth Lancaster.
