Soccer
teams
reach final
Last Saturday two
Goderich minor soccer
teams competed in the Lake
Huron Zone Recreation
Association Sportsfest held
in Seaforth.
Coach Dan McCallrun's
Goderich Atoms were the
outstanding 'team in their
division, and were extremely
disappointed to lose in the
championship final to
Elmira in a shoot-out.
Although totally dominating
the game territorially, they
were foiled time after time
by a brilliant display on the
part of the Elmira goalie.
In games leading up to the
final, Goderich defeated
Listowel Drillers 3-0, and
Ripley 4-0. Scorers in the
first game were Bob Lumley
with a pair of goals, and Paul
Hamilton with a single. In
the second game Bob
Lumley again scored two
goals, with Chad Papple and
Tim Harrison adding on goal
each.
Strikers Bob Lumley,
Chad Papple, Todd Papple;
midfielders Lonnie Rumig
and Aaron Duckworth as
well as left back Steve
Tzioumis were the stand-
outs in a hard working, well
disciplined team.
The Goderich Squirts also
reached the final in their
division, only to lose 3-0 to a
powerful Hanover team. In
previous games Goderich
defeated St. Columban 2-0,
on goals from Trisha Rumig
and Dave Lumley, and then
beat Paisley in a shoot-out.
In Squirt house league
action last Wednesday, first
place Raiders defeated
Bombers 2-1 to move into a
three point lead in the league
race with, three weeks
remaining in the schedule.
Trisha Rumig scored both
goals for the Raiders, and
Donnie Rivers replied with a
single for the Bombers. In
the second game, the
Bombers and Giants played
to a scoreless draw in a
• game featuring strong
defensive play by both
teams, which are currently
tied in second place with
three points each.
Peewees
lose two
straight
The Goderich Legion
Peewees were eliminated
from Ontario Baseball
Association (OBA) playoffs
after losing two straight
games to Kincardine in
preliminary round play.
Kincardine took the
opening game 6-1 at home
and then wrapped the best -
of -three series with a 6-4
victory in Goderich.
In the opening game,
Kincardine got a standout
pitching performance from
M. McLeod as he limited
Goderich to one run on just
three hits over seven in-
nings. He struck out 16
batters in the game.
Strangely enough,
(;oderich scored its run in
the top of the first inning and
held a 1-0 lead before Kin-
cardine came to bat. Scott
Garrow and Bill Whetstone
were both hit by pitches and
a hit by Byron Bowman
scored Garrow with the only
(oderich run. Bowman
singled again in the fifth and
(arrow with a seventh in-
ning double, completed the
(;oderich offense.
Kincardine scored four
runs in the third inning on
three hits and clinched the
win with two runs in the fifth.
Goderich jumped on
Mcleod for three runs in the
first inning of the second
game but Kincardine
rebounded to win the game 6-
4 and clinch the series.
Tom Durnin delivered a
key two -out single in the first
inning as Goderich scored
three runs and held a 3-0 lead
heading into the second
inning. Kincardine got single
runs in the second, third and
sixth inning and clinched the
series with a three -run rally
in the seventh.
The fourth Goderich run
came from the bat of
Bowman who hit a solo, lead
off homer in third inning.
While Goderich has been
eliminated from OBA
playoffs they will begin
WOAA league playoffs this
week. Ironically, they play
Kincardine.
The best -of -three series
begins in Kincardine
Thursday and the second
game is scheduled for
Goderich, Sunday at 1.36
p.m. at Agriculture Past.
