This seminar will give the homeowner an understanding of how to design a low energy/passive solar home. In this seminar you will review methods of building heat loss, discuss techniques for minimizing building heat loss (e.g. double stud wall, air light vapour barrier), discuss air-to-air heat exchangers, discuss building layout and floor plan in reducing energy use, examination of proper window selection and placement including insulating shutters, discuss use of thermal mass to reduce energy consumption and moderate temperatures, and examination into attached greenhouses and sun- spaces. The seminar will conclude with a slide presentation of low energy -passive solar homes from across Canada. SEMINAR LEADER: Stephen Carpenter, Professional Engineer Note: Registrations must be received by October 14, 1983: SOLAR DOMESTIC HOT WATER SYSTEMS Tuesday, November 15, 22 and 29, 1983 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. Waterloo Inn, 475 King St, N., Waterloo, Ontario Fee: $25 After space heating, domestic water heating is the biggest item in the homeowner's energy budget. This year over 3000 solar domestic hot water systems will be installed across Canada. This seminar will give the homeowner an understanding of how these systems work and how to select a system. In this seminar you will review residential hot water usage, discuss antifreeze, drainback and thermosyphon solar domestic hot water systems, estimate system performance and required system size, and discuss methods of installation. The seminar will conclude with a slide presentation of solar water heating systems across Canada.
