HARBOR
REPORT
BY RON GRAHAM
The Agawa Canyon
arrived light for salt from
Cleveland on August 4 and
cleared harbor the same day
for Alpean, Michigan.
The E.B. Barber arrived
light for salt from Thorold on
August 6 and cleared harbor
the same day for Alpean,
Michigan.
The Birchglen (ex J.M.
McCullough) arrived light
from Hamilton to load wheat
on August 5 and cleared
harbor the next day for
Midland.
The Francinelin arrived
from Collingwood with a part
load of wheat on August 6
and cleared harbor the next
day for Midland with wheat.
Ex -mayor
visits town
LOOKING
BACK
Mr. Thomas Tilt, who still
owns considerable property
here, has sold a number of
lots during his visit. The ex -
mayor has met many old
friends and all were
delighted to greet him. Mr.
Tilt, although living in
Detroit, is a British subject
and proudly asserts that he
will die one and that his last
resting place will be in the
Maitland.
Our enterprising jeweller,
Mr. W.E. Kelly, has built a
new optical room in his store
and has engaged Mr.
Montgomery, the Toronto
Eye Specialist, to deliver a
course of lectures on the new
system of sight testing which
has never been tried in
Goderich before.
The Summer Hotel
received 28 guests by boat
that arrived on Tuesday
evening and yesterday the
house was nearly full, with
only a few rooms vacant.
The Huron County Court
House almost went up in
smoke when fire, believed
caused by defective wiring,
broke out between the ceiling
and floor at the south end of
the hall this past week.
County Clerk George
Holman and caretaker
George James rushed to
extinguish the flames with
pails of water.
Goderich Township
residents are keeping their
doors locked at nights now.
There have been several
reports of stolen chickens,
potatoes, grain and clothing
recently and a great in-
crease has been noted in the
number of hoboes on the
roads.
Lightning started a fire
which destroyed a barn
owned by Charles Jones of
Nile district last week.
Eleven hogs, some hens,
machinery and the season's
crops were lost in the blaze.
The departure of three
members of the town's five -
man police force does not
mean the end of the in-
vestigation into the conduct
of the local officers. There
may be further important
developments at a police
commission meeting to be
held as soon as the chair-
man, Mayor E.C. Fisher,
returns from an out-of-town
trip.
After two weeks' work, a
crew of ten men from the
Ontario Department of High-
ways today wind up a survey
of a proposed new route for
Highway No. 21 to cross the
Maitland River at Saltford.
Tourists arriving by boat
at Snug Harbor this summer
may be thrilled to discover
that Goderich has supplied
them with a free ride uptown
in a courtesy car but two of
the town's taxi -cab owners
don't share those tourists'
delight and have taken their
complaints to the press.
Dr. Brian Lynch, Huron
County Medical Officer of
Health, said Tuesday it was
important for adults to
update their polio and
tetanus vaccinations in view
of the recent discovery of a
polio virus in the Oxford
County area.
According to Animal
Control Officer Dick Eisler,
a large number of skunks
have taken up residence
around some of the older
homes in town and while he's
willing to help people who
have a skunk problem, there
isn't a whole lot he can do.
