On June 17, 1903, 'Alex-
ander Pentland and Ada,
Augustine Were married at
the home of the bride's
parents on the.fourth conces-
sion of Ashfield Township.
Eighty years later, 66 of
their descendants, including
wives, and husbands, held a
family reunion at Brookside
School in honor of the 75th
birthday and 45th wedding
anniversary of Benson
Pentland and wife Rhena.
The family ranged in age
from 79 to a one -year-old
great -grand -granddaughter.
Twenty-six members of
the family were not able to
be present.
The afternoon was spent in
visiting and getting ac-
quainted with members of
the family Who live at a
distance. The. (supper was
catered and was much en-
joyed by all.
Family reunions are fun
but there is always some
sadness when those who are
gone forever are
remembered.
Helen Marsh of Madison,
Wisconsin, and Betty Marsh
of Auburn visited with Mel
Jones on Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stirl-
ing, Darlene and Harold of
Thamesville spent the week-
end with Elsie Irvin.
A relative shower was held
last Tuesday evening at the
home of Elsie Irvin, for
Annette Curran. whose mar-
riage to Jim Ritchie takes
place the end of August.
Congratulations to Wanda
Park and Tim Hodges who
were married on Saturday at
St. George's Anglican
Church, Goderich.
Congratulations to Mr.
and Mrs. Jeff Austin on the
birth of their son on Monday,
August 8 at Goderich hospit-
al, weighing 6 lb. 15 oz.
Betty Hatfield and Tammy
Lumsden of Yarmouth, Nova
Scotia, attended the Hodges -
Park wedding on Saturday.
Tammy was a maid of
honour.
Harvey Finnigan of Holi-
day, Florida, visited with
Cora and Alvin Sherwood in
Dungannon and Hazel Hab-
el, Irma Anderson and Geor-
gia Finnigan in Goderich,
recently.
Donnie Noble, son of Rog-
er and Lynn, celebrated his
third birthday on Saturday,
August 6.
Several from the area
motored to Varney Speedway
on Sunday evening to attend
the car races.
Let's get this thing going, dad! Two year-old Troy
McKenzie gives his dad John a hand in cutting some posts
at the Dungannon Kinsmen Park. The service club has
leased a parcel of land in the village from the township and
members are in the process of erecting creative playground
equipment. More than 70 man hours has gone into the

Ashfield Township council
has „decided. to pay 20 per
cent of„the cost of paving the
dental' Office perking lot at
the Lucknow and District
Medical Centre as agreed to
in the original agreement
which stipulates capital
costs will be shared 60 per
cent by the Village of
Lucknow and 20 per cent
each by the municipalities of
Ashfield, West Wawanopsh
and Kinloss.
The municipalities ihafed
the capital costs of the new
dental suite in a 25 ;her cent
split and since then Lneknow
has been trying to encpurage
the other municpallties to
agree to share all future
capital costs of the dental
suite on a 25 per cent basil.
Joe Come attended the
August 2 meeting of Aslt eld
Township Council regarding
the conditions imposed on his
lot in Port Albert by the Land
Division Committee. Omen
instructed the reeve to check
with the Huron County
Planning director before
giving a decision.
Geoffrey Walker attended
the meeting citing com-
plaints from ratepayers and
cottage owners about
Commercial Fishermen
setting their nets close to the
.shore in front of their
properties causing a hazard
to swim niers and small

boats in the area. Connell
directed the clerk to write to
the Minister of Natural
Resources expressing these
concerns and requesting that
the Commercial Fishermen
be required to ,stay at least
one mile from shore in Ash-
field Township.
By-law number 18-1983
authorizing the repair and
improvement of the
MacLennan Drain was given
three readings and passed.
The deadline for completion
of the MacLennan Drain was
extended to September 30,
1983.
A building permit was

approved for S. Poganntz, lot
6, concession 8 W.D. for a
house and a cottage on M 7,
plan 585 by J. Spittal.
The following resolution
was passed "Resolved that
the clerk be authorized to
make application to the
Ministry of Municipal
Affairs and Housing for the
January 1,1984 installation of
its BACPAC basic ac-
counting package with
funding under the Municipal
Action Program.”
Road accounts of $74,619.41
and general accounts of
$73,391.34 were approved for
payment.
y holds reunion
The Johnston -Baker reu-
nion was held at the home of
Grace and Arthur Johnston
at Bluewater Beach in
Goderich recently with 59 at-
tending from North Bay,
Gravenhurst, Toronto, Dor-
chester, Nairn, Barrie and
London.
A lovely lunch held outside
was topped off by a beautiful
45th wedding anniversary
cake , made by Mrs.
Margaret Clark, in honor of
her parents' (the Johnstons)
anniversary.
After lunch, races were
held for the children and
adults. Ladies kick the shoe
was won by Louise White
and the men's by Brian -
Johnston. The jelly bean con-
test was won by Janet Steele.
The oldest person present
was Mrs. Mildred
Mulholland. The longest
married couple was Mr. and
Mrs. Daniel Clark. The
youngest girl was Colleen
Moore and the youngest boy
was the Brown baby. Com-
ing the farthest distance was
Donald McFarlane; the
shortest, Chris Johnston.
The horseshoe pitch was won
by Dennis Cooper and Bruce
Johnston.
Next year's' reunion will be
held at the same place.
