This weekend during the 1st annual
Goderich Ball Hockey Tournament, the
Goderich .Rink Rats proved that losing
does not always mean defeat. The local
team proved the point after being beaten
by Stratford Coca Cola, 7-1 in their first
game. The Rink Rats then moved into the
"B" division and proceeded to down
Stratford Local 1325, 5-3; the Ripley
Thunderbolts, 5-1'; and Mooretown State
Electric, 11-1. The win over Mooretown
resulted in the Rats being awarded the
"B" division trophy.
• In the final game against State Electric,
• the Rats blew away their opposition,
scoring all 11 goals consecutively. • Ron
• Sowerby, who was named "B" division
MVP, scored four of the goals and got two
assists. The other goals were scored by
Paul Kelly, who got one goal and two
assists, Brian Merian and Rob Standen,
who both scored twice, Rick Stahl and
Bruce Sheardown. The lone State Electric
goal was scored by Paul Holmes. •
The Rats also had no problem disposing
of Ripley ,during the, "B" semi-finals.
Sowerby scored once and Jeff Sargent
scored twice to give their team a 3-0 lead at
the end of the first period.
During the second period, John Lehay
and Kevin Meriam each scored to increase
the Rats' lead to five. However, Rob
Regier of Ripley, managed to kill the Rats'
shutout when he scored with four minutes
left in the game.
In their game against Stratford Local
1325, the Rats didn't get gong until the
second period.
During the first period Dan Malliet
opened the scoring for the Rats but four
minutes later Local 1325 tied the score. By
the end of the period the Rats went ahead
2-1 on a power -play goal by Sowerby.
With a man in the penalty box at the
start of the second period the Rats were
forced into a defensive game. Local 1325
put on the pressure but the combination of
the Rats' defense and superb goaltending
proved too strong as they were unable to
score.- -However, four minutes after the
penalty had expired Stratford scored to tie
the game once more. The goal seemed to
spark the Rats and the team proceeded to
score three goals within two minutes to
make the score,5-2. Stratford got the final
point of the game on a power -play goal.
In their opening game, the Rats were
taken by surprise when Stratford Coca
Cola scored six times during the first
period. Rick Stahl got the only goal for the
Rats, which he scored on a power -play.
Although the local team had three
power -play opportunities during the
second period they failed to capitalise on
them. But Coca Cola managed to use one of
their power -play situations when they
scored the final goal of the game.
Besides defeating the Rink Rats, Coca
Cola also shut -out the Goderich Rebels, 5-
0. The Stratford team then scraped by
Goderich United, 5-4 in the semi-finals.
In the first period, Dennis Dohaniuk
opened the scoring for United and the team
held on to their lead until they were
assessed a penalty at the 12:31 mark. Coca
Cola tied the score on the power -play and
then scored twice more. Utilizing a two-
man advantage United came back and
scored on a goal by Terry Shoemaker and
then another goal by Paul Helesic.
Going into the second period with the
score tied 3-3, both teams played their
hardest, however, Coca Cola got the next
goal. Undaunted, United kept pushing and
as a result scored once more to tie the
game. With only seconds left on the dock
and an overtime period drawing close;
Coca Cola put the game away when they
scoredagain.
In the "A" final, Coca Cola capitalized
on Port Elgin Rod Avis Jewellers'
penalties and defeated the team, 6-3.
Going into the second period the game
was tied -at 2-2, but then Port Elgin was
assessed* penalty, whichEruvedcostly as
StratfodrManaged tei Stare
later the team scored another goal Before
the end of the second period Port Elgin
scored to come within one goal of Strat-
ford.
During the third period Coca Cola scored
twice, one of which was a power -play goal,
to win the game.
In other games played during the
tournament United defeated Sherwood
Express, 1-0; Ripley downed Listowel, 5-0;
Port Elgin beat Stratford Scholar's
Choice, 7-2; and Mooretown State Electric
defeated Goderich Knights, 3-1.

The Friday night game of the week
featured Goderich Auto Sales at home
against Meneset.
The visiting Meneset team jumped out in
front with solid hits from John Marshall,
Jim Hebei and John Orr. With two runners
still on base, Bill Rahbek belted a three
run homer over the left field fence. flits by
Rob Jerry and Don Hullah rounded out the
five run inning for Meneset.
As the Meneset bats died, the Auto Sales
began to hum. Dale Baechler, Rick Sower -
by, John Ginn, Scott MacCauley, and Mark
Lassaline each had three hits for Auto
Sales. Chipping in with two apiece were
Mike O'Brien, Bill Fritzley, Glen Mac-
Cuspey, Jim Fairish, Jack Kellough and
Jack Meriam. John Hodges and Bert
MacAdam each contributed one bit, to this
come from behind 14-8 Auto Sales victory. r
Congratulations to both dubs for an en-
joyable Friday night game (too bad the old
Texas Leaguer was unable to attend this
• fine showing of his ball club!)
Goderich Elevators had a fine week as
they swept a double header en Wednesday
night moving into "A" Division contention.
Although I hesitate to use the word
"upset" I cannot think of a better word to
. describe their 7-6 decision over Goderich
Chrysler. They carried their hot bats into
the second game which they won 15-5 over
Renegades.
Although there are still a few, roisnaat-
ches in the GMSL, the league as a whole
tends to be tightening up. A lot of dubs
have tightened up defensively and the out-
come of most games lately seems to de-
pend on the consistency of the ,bats. As we
approach the end of our regular schedule
(July 17) I can only see the races for the 3
divisions becoming very close.
When the double round robin post season
play begins on July 19, we will see 102
pines of fierce competition -- recreational
ball in-mis' matches. • .. •
In other action around the league, Auto
Sales downed Carlow, 8-3, Canadian Tire
dropped a 9-5 decision to Little Bowl but
bounced back to crush Garb and Gear 16-4
and Tickers 21-3.
Sifto Salt swept a double header downing
Meneset,, 10-7 and Garb and Gear 11-10.
Harbour Park Raiders edged Little Bowl,
4-3 but later were found at the wrong end of
a 24-4 score against the Renegades.
Little Bowl dumped Local 1863, 21-8
while the Bulldogs edged Coyotes, 5-2.
Cedar Lodge doubled 1863, 14-7 and Gas
Rite outscored Tickers, 16-12.
Carlow forfeited a game to the Bears due
to insufficient numbers and Bluewater
chalked up their first victory of the year
with a dose 12-11 decision over Garb and
Gear. The score of the Ticker-Bluewater
game is unknown.
Congratulations are extended to the
Auto Sales team for submitting a sum-
mary of their Friday night action.
No fines were assessed this week. Keep
up the great work guys!
