Ministry provides
$200,000 for repairs
By Stephanie Levesque
Work will 'go ahead this
summer on the brick work
and roof at St. Mary's
Separate School in Goderich
after the, Hltron-Perth
Separate School Board
received "word it will get
$200,000 for the project from
the Ministry of Education.
Director of education
William Eckert told the
board at its June 13 meeting
that confirmation had come
from the ministry seven
days earlier.
A month ago the board had
learned that its request for
the ministry to pay 81 per
cent of planned capital pro-
jects totaling $476,000 had
been turned down.
But the situation took a
turn for the worse as in mid-
May Mr. Eckert visited the
school and found "exag-
gerated deterioration" in the
brick work. Brian Garrett of
the architectural firm of
Kyles, Kyles and Garrett of
Stratford was requested to
visit the site and he agreed .
with the director's opinion.
The area of the school was
fenced off to avoid injury.
Mr. Garrett informed the ar-
chitectural services division
of the ministry of the condi-
tion of the bricks and in-
dicated he would be recom-
mending repairs immediate-
ly. Both Mr. Eckert and
superintendent of business
and finance Jack Lane. con-
tacted the regional office in
London and explained the
urgency of the necessary
repairs at the school.
Mr_ Eckert emphasized
there is no structural
damage to the school_
This isn't the first time
brick repair has had to be
done at St. Mary's. In 1976
some repair work was done
to the bricks and again in
1979 alteration and repairs
were done to the upper por-
tion of the gym and the roof
area.
It was in early August last
year when the Stratford ar-
chitectural firm was called
in to do a detailed investiga-
tion of the building. At that
time a full report was
prepared and capital funds
were requested from the
ministry.
"In October we were in-
formed by the ministry that
the situation didn't appear to
be too serious," said Mr.
Eckert_
Tenders will be called and
it is expected 63,000 faulty
bricks on the 1969 addition
will be replaced. Also 12,650
square feet of the 1969 addi-
tion will be re -roofed.
The remainder of • the
capital projects planned
were not approved by the
ministry. The projects in-
clude roof repairs to a
number of schools in the
Huron -Perth system.
