Pickled herring, a favorite Dutch snack
A special treat
Be sure to try some pickled herring at Klompen Feest,
it's a traditional snack that's eaten year round in Holland.
The Dutch like the salted version but in Holland they're
especially fond of "green herring," the first of the season
which starts in May. After a few weeks the fish is salted.
Try herring on toast or as an hors d'oeuvre. In Holland
the best way to eat herring is from a street vendor's
pushcart. Grab the herring by the tail, throw your head
back and treat your tastebuds to the Dutch delicacy.
