would like to give .a
retrospective account oif
heir activities during :the
intervening months.
The November meeting
took place at the home. of Flo
and Frank Warnock. The
president, Gailya .Maguire,
read an article con-
memorating the 100th an-
niversary of A,Y. Jackson's
birth.
Flo Warnock, who has
become an accomplished
china painter,: spoke on that
art, durinng Which she "
displayed various objects in
different stages of the in-
tricate process involved. She
explained that china is
colored in stages and must
undergo a firing process
after each stage. A good
piece can undergo at least
five firings. Gold color- is
black after firing and needs
patient polishing to achieve
its brightness.
The December meeting
took the form of a rousing

held at MacKay Centre, well
attended by club members
with their snows. .
The first 'Meeting 2f 19.83
was held at the home of
Lonna Vincent, President.
Gailya Maguir read a press
article on the life anti:work• of
Robert Bateman, famous
wild life artist, written to.
inform the public about a,
pending exhibition. Tire had
been greatly, influenced by
working with the Group of
Seven until he attended an
exhibition of Andrew '
Wyeth's painting which
changed his artistic direc-
tion,
Katinka • Dorrance in-
troduced ideas about art and
creativity for general
discussion. She stated treat""
there is a distinction between
art seen as artificiality, and
genuine art. The first is art
as decoration; a way of
making life prettier. The
second is art as a way of
creating new forms of
reality. Every truly creative
process is an endless ex-
ploration. Quoting from
"The Courage to Create":
"It is absurd to think of•
artists simply painting
nature as if they were only
anachronistiop otographers
of trees, lakes and moun-
tains. Genuine artists reveal
their relationship. to the
world." '
A March meeting was held
in the sitting room of
MacKay Centre with
Katinka Dorrance as hostess
and . Gailya Maguire
presiding.
Lorna Vincent, in charge
of the program, spoke on
• "What is Art?" starting a
general discussion on the
endless aspects of this
subject. "Art is many things
to many people, a universal
thing which speaks to the
viewer regardless of his or
her culture. It is the stuff of
life, not always beautiful, but
should engender an
emotional response from the
viewer. Art is a way of ex-
pressing ourselves in our
everyday life. We all par-
ticipate in art regardless of
whether or not we un-
derstand it."
