Sorority marks 52nd anniversary
Christmas Stocking Raffle to
the Livery Theatre. Profit
from their annual yard sale
held each spring were
donated to Family Services
Christmas Bureau. Their
major project for the year
was the purchase of the Save
a Child stickers provided for
each child's bedroom in the
Goderich . area. This . was
done as a co-operative ven-
ture with the local firemen.
The stickers will always be
available to new families
moving into the area or
anyone who is moving, and
can be picked up at the local
fire hall.
Life, learning and friend-
ship are the bywords of Beta
Sigma Phi, and all members
work hard to reach the goals
shared by all chapters .
From the first chaper
formed in Abilene, Kansas,
Beta Sigma Phi has grown
from a small social and
cultural group into an Inter-
national Sorority that
devotes much time to ser-
vice efforts as well. Beta
Sigma Phi is the ' largest
Greek letter Sorority in the
world, and has grown in its
52 -year. history • from one
chapter of seven women to a
Sorority of 250,000 members
active in 12,500 chapters in
countries throughout the
world.
The three chapters in
Goderich joined with nine
chapters from Exeter. Mit-
chell and Clinton in
Holmesville at the Township
Hall, April 30 to celebrate
the 52nd anniversary of the
founding of Beta Sigma Phi.
Janet Amos, Director of the
Blyth Theatre, was the guest
speaker for the evening.
All three chapters in
Goderich take part annually
in the sale of daffodils for the
Cancer Society, and are now
making plans to sponsor a
Ladies' Night Out next Oc-
tober. All ladies in the area
are invited to partake in the
enjoyable evening, 'which
will include dinner and
entertainment as well as
casino tables. The biggest
joint venture by the three
chapters each year is their
annual May Ball. This will
be held again this year at the
Community Centre, May 28.

Osborn as the "First Woman
of the Year"'., at their 52nd
anniversary celebration held
April 26 at the Holmesville
Township Hall. Chapters
from Clinton, Godertch,
Exeter and Mitchell were
present.
The "First Woman of the
Year" Award is presented to
a lady in the cornmunity who
has made outstanding
contributions. Mrs. Osborn
was recognized for her
"volunteer" work in making
the Palliative Care Service
for the terminally ill a
reality at Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital in
Goderich.,
On January 15, 1982 a
presentation was made to
the Medical Advisory
Committee by Mrs. Osborn;
Mrs. Gwen Berry, Director
of Nursing, V.Q.N. Huron -
Perth; and Mrs. Blair
Keller, Palliative Care Co-
ordinator at Walkerton
Hospital. Upon recom-
mendation of the Medical
Advisory Committee, it was
approved by the Board of
Directors on January 25 and
modelled after the service at
the Walkerton Hospital and
the Royal Victoria Hospital,
Montreal. •
Mrs. Osborn began • her
role as co-ordinator of
Palliative Care Service on
March 1. A multi-
disciplinary Advisory
Committee was formed and
training of six volunteers
NSTETT
JEINEI1t_ERS
was completed by the end of
June. visiting in the hospital
began July 1, The im,-.
plementatiolt of the service
was greatly• accelerated by
the help of Mrs. Keller and
Dr. L.t,.. deVeber, of
Cb ldren's War Memorial
Hospital, London, The
service is a department of
the hospital and the volun-
teers are considered staff.
The Beta Sigma Phi's
motto is "Life, Learning and
Friendship" and this led the
members to nominate Mrs.
• Osborn since her work in
Palliative Care involves all
three of these aims. The
service helps a terminally ill
patient by attending to the
small details, enhancing the
quality of remaining life;
teaching the family mem-
bers how to deal with the
present situation by giving
them emotional and
physical support; and offers
a 24-hour on call service
through Mrs. Osborn and her
volunteers - for support and
confidential conversation in
time of need.
