Feest
CLINTON - Wooden shoes
will click, tulips will bloom,
and windmills will turn as
Clinton stages its third an-
nual Klompen Feest,, or
wooden shoe festival, on
May 20 and 21.
Celebrating Ontario's
Dutch heritage, the event is
a unique celebration in
southwestern Ontario. It has
become an annual event in
Clinton and has attracted
more than 10,000 people in
previous years.
This year the celebration
kicks -off on Friday, May 20
and the main attractions and
festivities will be in full sw-
ing on Saturday, May 21.
Clinton will be attractively
decorated in the Dutch
theme, with Whirling wind-
mills and colorful barrels of
fresh tulips. Manyof the
merchants will be wearing
traditional costumes of the
Netherlands, complete with
handmade wooden shoes,
specially imported from
Holland for the event. •
Hundreds of wooden' shoes
will be available for sale at
Klompen Feest, and booths
selling Dutch crafts and art-
work, -luscious, dark
chocolate and rich import
cheeses will be set up at R
ton's Community Par
Like the " hentic
festivals held ; Holland,
Clinton's unicole version is a
lively, fun,affair and on Fri-
day night,pdbple will be
singing and dancing in the
streets with a special out-
door concert and dance.
The booths will open on
May 20 and a two-hour
parade will start things off
on May 21 at 1 p.m. More
than half -a -dozen bands are
scheduled to appear in the
parade, along with dozens of
floats.
Saturday will also feature
traditional Klompen dancing
at the Community Park. All
the dancing and music has
proven to make good ap-
petites. People can satisfy
their appetites at a giant
barbecue which starts at 5
p.m. with two more sittings
at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Willow
wood is
the best
In the special insert, the
Klompen Feest Souvenir
booklet, the story on
Klompen (wooden shoes),
neglected to mention that
willow wood is the best for
the traditional Dutch shoes.
Willow wood is non -porous,
when dried, it does not soak
up water. It is also a lighter
wood resulting in easier
wear.
Unfortunately due to a
typographical error, the
story read that poplar is the
best wood for shoes. The
qualities attributed to poplar
wood in the story are actual-
ly those of willow wood.
While poplar is the most
plentiful wood in the
Netherlands, it is not the
best for shoes. Because of its
porous nature, water soaks
the wood and the Dutch know
that waterproof shoes are a
main requirement in their
wet land.
