GARDENING TIP
Sand & Heavy Clay soils benefit
significantly from the incorporation of peat
moss, manure, or other types of organic
matter. In clay, it loosens the soil, thereby
increasing aeration, improving drainage,
and allowing for easy spading. In sand it
improves the soil's ability to hold water and
reduces leaching of plant nutrients.

Huron Chapter of
Canadian Heart Fund
exceeds objective
"HEART MONTH" in
Canada is now over for
another year and the Huron
Chapter of Canadian Heart
Fund, Ontario Division
wishes to announce that they
'have exceeded their objec-
tive of $30,000.
Pat Whalen, Campaign
Chairman says that a final
account figure will be
available soon and expresses
his gratitude to each area
captain and to all of their
volunteer canvassers for the
excellent job they have just
completed. Special note of
gratitude goes to chapter co-
ordinator - Joan Van Den
Broeck for her great
assistance in organizing this
year's campaign. The cam -
pa ign
am-paign was successful
because it was properly
organized yes, but more im-
portantly because . the
residents, organizations and
businesses in Huron County
recognized the . importance
of this appeal and gave
generously.
Because of the success of
the campaign and others .
across Ontario the provin-
cial objective in 1983 of
$8,450,000 will hopefully be
attained.
"Without your willing co-
operation we would not be
able to express such a
positive outlook," Mr.
Whalen noted.
The Medical Research
Committee of the Ontario
Heart Foundation met at the
end of January to review
research applications sub-
mitted for funding.
It was decided to set aside
$10.8 million to 181 heart and
stroke projects commencing
July 1983.
Locally some of the cam-
paign funds will be used to
sponsor Clinical Days for
nurses and doctors, and for
literature explaining ' the
various aspects of heart il-
lness and care. The chapter
is also funding the printing of
a' 'Heart Health' curriculum
for Grades 7 and 8. The plan
is for the Health Unit to in-
troduce this curriculum dur-
, ing `Professional Activity
Days' in June m both . the
public' and separate; schools,
The balance of the funds col-
lected will be forwarded to
Toronto to be used in resear-
ch. Mr. Whalen added,
"Thank you again for your
support and for helping us
ensure that research against a
our nation's number one
health enemy will continue ".
