And tite Science et, a smaller, touring version of the Centre upholds the tradition The Circus, currently, in Goderich. until May 15;=is a touring show of about 40 euitibits. Everything there is meant to intrigue; surprise, - or stretch the,` mind. The exhibits melude anything from rope -and ring puzzles, to a bicycle-ppowered radio, to an electroniie synthesizer. "The exhibits are • mien - Wed •to, a hands-on idea," says Earl Sweeney, one of the staff at the Science Circus.. By hands-on, he means that people, can ac tively experiment with the exhibits, and by working with their hands they can more easily learn what the exhibit is supposed to teach. The most, popular exhibits, says Sweeney, are the sound synthesizer, the talking typewriter, the talking adding machine, and the hot- air balloon. The staff also gives a regular show, which includes a demonstration of the Van de Graaff machine—that's the big silver ball that makes your hair stand on end. The Science Circus is kept busy with seven scheduled school tours a day. Public school classes from across the county come in for an hour each to experiment with the displays and to see a demonstration. Sweeney says they get a lot of adults at the Circus too. He says the children who come in the day bring their parents back at night to show them around. The children end up teaching their parents what they learned. earlier. Altogether, about 600 visitors come to the Circus each day, ' `fIt's • net a very int pk,idatiug aituatton "fifty* SwceneirA "and the pa" rens enjoy 'playing whit the exhibits too," 'He says everyone has a good.tine,i end a lot of l eple come bake ;again ends$albs, The Clrcue is not always • " out on the road. `.jt does:aix or seven tours a year mostly i><i Ontarl+as,. He says they are planning 'a trip to Japan at the end of the year, and some European coun- tries are also interested, The Ontario tours are funded entirely by the provincial government. Sweeney says the Science Centre was a gift to 'the people of Ontario for the Canadian Centennial. "With the tours, everyone gets the chance to share the gover- nment's gift to the provin- ce." Sweeney says, the Science Centre is unique because it is one of the few totally hands- on museums in Canada. The Centre's staff members are all professionals in different scientific fields. The touring Science Circus changes staff every few days. Sweeney says this keeps the staff fresh for the large numbers of people who come to the Circus each day. The new staff can often better explain or demon- strate the exhibits which are in their own field of study. The Science Centre was contacted first about a year ago by the Business Improvement Association.
