„ The GDCI•junior Vikings have a record
of one win and one loss following the
opening games of their 1983 Huron -Perth
soccer schedule.
Last Wednesday the Viking S thumped
the Wingham Madill Mustangs 3-0.
Goaltender Jeff Le Beau was called on to
make only five stops as his teammates
controlled the pace of the game.
Grant Garrow scored one of the
Goderich goals, redirecting a shot past the
Wingham keeper. John Thompson scored
the other two goals, one of them op a 40
yard free kick.
Friday in Stratford, the Vikings lost 2-1
to the Northwestern Huskies. The Vikings
led 1-0 on John Thompson's goal in the first
half but they sagged in the second half and
the Huskies took the initiative, scoring two
unanswered goals.
Coach Darryl Carpenter's Vikings were
missing some key players due to injuries.
The Vikings are hoping for better suc-
cess against Norwell and St. Marys in their
home games this week.
Seniors win one game, tie another
BY TD
The GDCI senior Vikings are off to a
• strong start in Huron Perth Conference
high school soccer action.
The Vikings began their schedule last
week with a 2-0 shutout victory over the
Wingham Madill Mustangs here Wed-
nesday.
Friday in Stratford, coach Dick Madge's
Vikings played to a 2-2 tie with the Nor-
thwestern Huskies. The Huskies were
undefeated going into the game, having
defeated Stratford Central and Norwell in
their first two games.
The Vikings have two home games this
week., Monday they met Norwell and
Friday, 'St. Marys will be the visitors on
the GDCI pitch.
The Vikings controlled the game from
the start against Wingham, giving goalie
Greg Lapaine little to do to record the
shutout, but Lapaine made a couple fo
good saves when the Mustangs did manage
to penetrate the solid Goderich defensive
wall anchored by fullbacks Dave
McDonald, Chris Pitre, Brad Armstrong
and Brian Mitchell.
Going against the wind, the Vikings got
the only goal of the first period. Jamie
Reynolds headed in Paul McCartneY's
perfect corner kick for the only score of the
opening half.
Jim MacDonald got the other Goderich
goal on a penalty kick awarded for a hands
violation by Wingham inside the 18 yard
line Midway through the second half of
play.
• The Vikings had several other good
scoring chances. Daryl Madge and Greg
Marshall played aggresively on the for-
ward line and had good chances.
The Vikings had to settle for the tie in
Stratford when the Huskies scored in the
last minute of play in what seemed like an
elongated second half.
Jeff Feagan gave the Vikings the early
lead, scoring on a loose ball near the
Stratford goal five minutes into the game.
The Huskies tied the score before the half
ended.
Jim MacDonald's goal on a penalty kick
gave the Vikings a lead which stood up
until the final -minute score by Stratford.
The Vikings got good efforts from Jeff
Denomme, Mark Crawford and Joe
Morrissey up front. Mid -fielders Jeff
Feagan, Terry Bean, Scott Bell, Andrew
Telford and Paul McCartney also played
well.
Casey Vandenheuvel was steady in the
Viking goal.
GDCI to host championship meet
On Tuesday, May 10 and WednesdaY,
May 11 (the rain date is Thursdav)
G.D.C.I. will host the Huron -Perth Con-
ference Track and Field championships.
This is the first time the event will take
place in Goderich.
Approximately 50 G.D.C.I. students will
compete against students from eleven
different schools. Taking part hi the meet
are; • South Huron, South Central,
F.E.Madill, Seaforth, St. Marys, Stratford
Northwestern, Stratford Central, Mitchell,
Listowel and Norwell.
• Coach Phil Bugler says he has, "high
hopes for the team. We finished second last
year and I think we can do better than that
this time."
But Bugler adds, "right now the team
lacks depth. We have some exceptional
athletes but we need more team mem-
bers."
Bugler feels the G.D.C.I. team members
will face their toughest competition from
South Huron and Stratford Central.
Although the meet is being held at the
neva high school track and field complex,
Bugler says St.Marys school is acting as
convenor.
