Here are room -by -room
suggestions in decorating
with wood that will at once
delight the eye and be useful,
Family. Room - The effec-
tive family room functions
as both an informal gather-
ing place and a cosy room
for more formal entertain-
ing.
Start by establishing a
conversation area. Arrange
seating around music,
garnes, TV and other
favorite family activities.
Use wooden dividers,
screens or shelving to sec-
tion off areas. Wooden
chairs, frames or plant
holders add a rich, comfor-.
table touch.

reference materials.
For snack dining, try a tilt-
top table or a small drop• -.leaf
end table. Space problems?
Get stackable tables or
snack tables: with caddies.
Dining room - This should
be a quiet room, to provide
time out from modern liv-
ing's frantic pace. For a
long, narrow dining area,.
choose an elongated oblong
table.
Round butterfly tables set
off square spaces nicely.
Ladder -back chairs form a
handsome pattern against
the wall, while saving mid-
dle floor space.
Mirrors, creating the im-
pression of a larger area,
also spotlight drapery colors
Wood is still the only material that can add ageless charm and
character to a room. In doors, trim, shelving, walls and
flooring nothing beats the warmth of wood.
Clean upholstery...
• from page 3
check your upholstery tag
for specifics. (The industry
has adopted a standard'
cleanabihty code to indicate
the proper method for doing
all types of upholstery
fabric.)
Once you've gotten the tag
go-ahead, you're ready to
begin the easy, six -step pro-
cedure. Here's how to do it:
Pre-test the fabric for col-
or fastness- Choose an in-
conspicuous area of your
upholstered piece and rub
the spot with a clean, wet
cloth. If no color is
transferred to the cloth; your
piece is colorfast. (If the col-
or bleeds or changes,
however, it's a good idea to
get in touch with the
manufacturer for cleaning
advice.) With exception of
velvet; satin and silk, just
about all- upholstery fabrics
are cleanable 9f they are
shrink -resistant and color-
fast.
Vacuum thoroughly -
Vacuum the piece complete-
ly and thoroughly to remove
surface dirt. Be sure not to
forget the crevices.
Apply upholstery shampoo
- Following the can direc-
tions, spread the cleaning
foam with a circular motion.
To avoid wetting the padding
or fiberfill, take care to use
as little moisture as possible.
It's best to work from the
edges of the soiled area
toward the center.
Wipe the piece with a
damp sponge - To be sure the
residual shampoo has been
removed, it's a good idea to
wipe the piece down with a
damp sponge.
Vacuum thoroughly again
- After allowing the
upholstery to dry thoroughly-
-
horoughly- which usually takes about.
an hour - vacuum again to be
extra certain that all the
Shampoo has been removed.
^ Apply fabric protector -
Making sure the piece is
perfectly dry, hold the can
about eight inches away and
spray the upholstery
thoroughly. This will keep
your furniture cleaner
longer because once treated,
spills will simply bead up
and can easily be whisked
away.
Your upholstery is now
protected until the next time
you shampoo!
