carpets are :made- of nylon
fibres because of its long-
lasting toughness. Nylon

specially treated.
Polypropylene, second on-
ly .to nylon' in. durability,
generates lesss static than
any other fibre. And since it
resists stains and moisture,
it is one of the easiest to keep
clean.
Polyester is soft and affor-
dable. It provides a lovely,
high, lustre look and pleasant
feel. Although it 'does resist
abrasion, it may not spring
back quite as well as nylon
when it's tufted into high pile
construction.
In the tufting process,
yarn is inserted into the
backing by rows of small
needles. The tension of the
yarn can be adjusted so it
locks in different lengths,
thus creating a series of pat-
terned loops or "tufts." In
cut -pile construction, these
loops are cut so there are
always two yarn ends in
each tuft.
Density, the number of
tufts packed into each
square inch and pile height
also : influence durability.
The deeper the pile, the
more luxurious the feel.
However, low pile heights
tend to wear better.
Level -loop carpets have
dense, heavy yarn with a
tough texture and low pile
height. It's not fancy or lux-
urious, but it wears like

h carpet is a cut -loop
pile with dense construction.
It's often used for formal
decorating because of the
deep, rich. pile although it
does "shade,', or deepen col-
or, when brushed from side
to side. Flushes wear well 10
moderate traffic: areas.
Shag, a tali loose plush, is
made with tuftsmuch far-
ther apart. Yarn ends
overlap so when traffic hits
the pile, it wears the sides
rather than the tips of the
yarn.
Frieze, or twist styles, look
similar to plushes except for
their grainier surface tex-
ture. The tightly twisted
yarn is heat -set, to reduce
raveling -and fraying. They
resist crushing and matting
and don't show footprints or
shade like ordinary Blushes.
The pia►ose of caplet pad-

the carpet so it won't rub
against the floor.
Common padding .
materials are :ppolyurethane,
urethane and foam All can
vary in perform nannce accor-
ding to manufacturer:
Most people look for pad
ding that feels soft . and
cushy. This often proves to
be a mistake since very
cushy padding can go flat
under constant traffic. It is
hest to :choose a more rigid.
material that will keep its
shape and not "bottom -out."
Some carpets come with
attached rubber backing so
.they pre too difficult to in-
stall yourself. You can either
glue the carpet down or lay it
in place.
Installing carpet with
separate padding is more
difficult. The padding must
be put in place one section at.
a time and stapled down.
Glueing is not recommend-
ed. The carpet must then be
stretched taut to reach
beyond the padding edge.
A six -step guideline
to upholstery cleaning
When it comes to cleaning,
there is probably no area
that needs attention more
than upholstered furniture.
If you're tempted to put
the whole thing off because
bringing in a professional
cleaner is an expensive pro-
position, here's some good
news. It really is possible to
do a thorough, professional
job of upholstery cleaning
and protecting at home, all
by yourself. All you need are
a team of the right products
and some professional
guidelines.
The easiest way to do the
job is with a convenient pro-
duct like upholstery sham-
poo. Most upholstery is
cleanable by the foam sham-
poo method, but it's best to
