The local Legion had purchased the plane from the federal government in 1964 but decided to sell it to the Sully Foundation a few years ago because of insufficient funds to keep it maintained. Now, with the awarding to Canadian Warplane Heritage Inc. (CWH) of a $104,000 federal -provincial grant under the national New Economic Employment Development (NEED) program, the Lancaster will be completely restored, according to an an- nouncement in the March issue' of Canadian Aircraft Operator. Under • the terms of the grant to CWH (which is for application to salaries only), the Mount Hope -based flying museum is committed to the hiring of six new employees from the ranks of the unemployed for a period of one year. One of the six will be a licensed and ex- perienced aircraft main- ' ,isenandLrefiglhOt, who will be ,arespensiblefer training and supervising the other five employees, the basic qualification for whom ,will be only an indication of mechanical aptitude. EASTER WEEKEND be justified, CWH is aiming :' .for completion within the allotted year so that the Lancaster can be flying in 1984, the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Canadian Air Force and the tenth anniversary of Canadian Warplane Heritage. To power the restoration project Laneaster,'CWH has been assured of four Packard Merlins from the ex -RCAF „ Lancaster at. Oshawa Airport. The Oshawa Lancaster was undertaken as a restoration project by. a group of local, enthusiasts who obtained • it - from an defunct museum in, Niagara Falls. As time went by, though a great deal of work was done on the air- craft, it became apparent that the project was much too large in terms of time and cost to be handled by volunteers alone ,and the work gradually came to a halt. A British collector who happens to have a stock of Merlin ' engines in the U.K. ti acquiired' ``Ethe Oshawa machine last year and, in exchange for assistance in dismantling the airframe preparatory for shipment overseas, agreed to turn its engines over, to CWH. The -Oshawa Lanc's engines have been kept inhibited and are reportedly . in good shape, capable of being restored to operating condition with relatively little work.
