artist, Sam l)ondi, is gaining
recognition for his worn,:
Last week he won second
prize, in the oil and acrylic
"Ralnting category at an art
show held at the Durham Art
Gallery.
Mr. Bondi, who is entirely
self-taught, said he is
pleased and somewhat
surprised to win at Durham
becausee there were close to
200 entries in the show. He
shown. his work in coin -
petitions at Owen Sound, but.
this is the first time he has
entered the Durham show.

employ this method now, he
said, because a scene can
change daily because of '

Mr. Bondi does a variety 0
painting, from nature scenes
to still lifes to• portraits,
which are his. favorites. He
has a collection of portraits
of Elvis Presley which he is
quite proud of, as well as one
'of Marilyn Monroe. He likes
to use oils because he finds
they are easier to work with.

some controversial issues
this year.
Women's rights, women's
use and misuse of drugs and
alcohol, and
microtechnology's effect on
wothen in the workplace and
in the home, are only,some of
the suggested topics.
These topics, prepared by
provincial conveners and ex-

sent to branch conveners in a
factsheet to help them plan
1983-84 meetings.
Each WI branch can
decide which topics or sub-
topics it is interested in
developing.

TV shows boost electricity
Two television shows,
"The Winds of War" and
"M.A.S.H." boosted afore
than television ratings
during February. Demand
for electricity also surged
during the broadcasts.
Hydro recorded a power
load pickup of 100,000
kilowatts (equal to about
300,000 television sets) when
the first of the seven in-
stallments of "The Winds of
War" was aired at 8 p.m. on
Sunday, February 6.
However, the rest of the
week showed no noticeable
load pickup during the pro-
gram's airtime.
The final episode of
"M.A.S.H." on Monday,
February 28 caused energy
demand to increase by 15,000
to 20,000 kilowatts (equal to
about 60,000 television sets)
when the program started at
about 8:30 p.m.
Throughout the 2'2 -hour
episode, there was a pattern
of small spurts and drops in
energy demand. A Hydro
spokesman said the changes
could be caused by viewers
turning on lights and opening
refrigerator doors during
commercials.
Exeter Lion elected
EXETER - Backed by a local
band of musicians and a
band of Lions, John R.
Stephens was elected
governor of Lions District A-
15 at the annual meeting in
Stratford.
The local Lion emerged
victorious in a two-way fight
for the top district post with
George Patton of the Kit-
chener Oktoberfest Club.
Both men had served the
past year as deputy -district
governor, representing two
zones which made-up the 42
club district.
The Main St. Jug Band and
tremendous" showing by
embers of the local club
triggered the election win.
"The ability to laugh at yourself is the beginning
of a life long comedy."
