The Goderich Signal-Star, 1983-03-16, Page 35i • BY THE REVEREND JOHN D.M. WOOD, Victoria Sto Benmiller United Churches • When the late Dr. Willard Sperry was dean of Harvard Divinity School, he reported that a prominent British. churchman, with whom he shared the platform • m a discussion, shot at him the unexpected:question, "Has it ever occurred to you that the Christian religion may not be true?" To this question, Sperry replied, "Yes, certainly. And 1. do not know that I could. feel, I really believed it unless at.:t i nes. I ` bad doubted it " '' There may be a few people who have,on .:forall,. seta, ed" all their doubts or never really had any, but most of usare like the man,In Mark's gospel (9:24) who said, `'Lord, I believe, help my. unbelief." Those who speak to us most convincingly of faith are those who have also fac- ed most honestly the alter- native of unbelief. In the 23rd Psalm it is written, "The Lord is my shepherd" But in the 42nd Psalm it is written, "My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, "Where is your God?". The words of Jesus on the cross, "Father. into Your hands I commit my spirit" are preceded by the words, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" It might be easier to stop -WO i our minds about: what God IS like, to. stop wonderinc g what .He :Intends, In the world ltd how it will. 613 come out. It might he simpler to lives pagans, to: letthe churchget along t. g without us, to keep. Christmas and Easter . as secular holidays, to silence the prodding of our con: sciences about justice and human rights, to never shed a• tear of pity, to newer hoPe or despair. That seems , a real possibility until we real- ly:look at it and even more really try to live it. Then it turns out that the difficulty of unbelief is greater than the difficulty of belief, for there is nothing to sustain us on our journey, no God whose purposes are being worked out in history, no kingdom to serve and labor for with the confidence that the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our God and of His Christ. Unbelief sets us outside the 'company of great believers. Huronview news World Day of Prayer held. Friday morning the World Day of Prayer was held at Huronview with a good at- tendance. AD OOULD BE AILThAT'S SFANDING BETWEEN YOU ANDA FQSFERGIILU On the surface, it's not difficult to have a mis takeniimpression about foster care. And if you never take the time to crack the surface, and find out the facts, you might very well be denying yourself, and a foster child, a.very rewarding experience. Your willingness to care -may be all the qualifica- tion you need to be a foster parent. Financial assistance, guidance and support are available -to foster parents. The personal rewards of sharingyour love with a child or young person, who really needs you are very great. Please contact your local Children's Aid Society or Family and Children's Services, and find out more about foster care. The children need you now more than ever before. And maybe you aced them too.
