Furniture store opens
Eight years. ago Ernie Schaerer
started a furniture outlet irrStratford and
the opening of Perth Furniture on the
Square Thursday marked the establish-
ment of the third store in a growing
chain. Schaerer, who has two inain
outlets in Stratford, said Perth Furniture
represents over 80 manufacturers of-
fering medium to classic style furniture.
The store opened on The Square at the
beginning of March and is managed by
Peter Steegstra. Perth Furniture for-
merly operated, out of Suncoast Mall for
one and a half years.
Fast food
Business people and shoppers will be
able to grab a quick lunch on Monday,
March 21 when the Court Restaurant
opens a new dining room.`
Located beneath the present Court
Restaurant dining room at 120 Cour-
tHouse Square, the Courts' Bottom will
feature specialty sandwiches, bun filler
sandwiches, salads and steaming hot
chili.
Owner Bill Gibson says he will be of-
fering a wholesome quick meal at a
reasonal?le price. "I want people to go
away happy," Gibson explains.
The Courts' Bottom will be open from
11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Flower store
Smith's Flower Fasions owned by Reg
'and Davina Smith has just opened at 166
CourtHouse Square.
Silk flowers, dried flowers, tropical
plants, flowering plants as well as
preserved plants are only a few of the
items being sold. "We have a plant for
every need," Reg says.
The store also offers a self serve
section where customers can purchase as
Many silk or dried flowers as they wish.
Wicker wear, plant accessories and
plant care products are also available.
The store is managed by Dixie
Cameron. Other staff includes; ap-
prentice florist, Cindy Smith; and florist,
Don Henry.
New concept
A men's shoe store, Man's First Step,
has just opened in the Suncoast Mall and
is owned . by Don Corriveau and
managed by Brian Reed.
The store's name originated because
Corriveau felt the concept of the store
was a totally new step.
Basically Corriveau takes brand .name
stock, tears it down and rebuilds the shoe
into proper fitting orthopedic footwear.,
Corriveaus says all of this is done without
losing the shoe's stylish design..
BUSINESS
BEAT
Man's First Step carries a wide variety
of dress and casual shoes up to 5E widths.
Specialized shoes
Don Corriveau, owner of Don's Shoe
Place, has opened an Athlete's Foot
franchise in the Suncoast Mall.
Managed by Brian Reed, the store
caters to men, women and children who
Corriveau says, "are interested in
purchasing proper fitting athletic foot-
wear."
e, Brookes, Adidas and Converse
only a few of the brand names which
are in stock. But since Corriveau's
franchise is only one of 50 Atlete's Foot
stores he says, "If someone is interested
in purchasing footwear -for a specialized
sport there shouldn't be any difficulty in
getting it."
Besides selling footwear the store also
offers athletic clothing such as rugby
pants, jogging suits and rain gear. "With
the exception of hockey we can outfit any
athlete," Corriveau explains.
The store also carries accessories such
as shoe races and foot care products.

Taxes
to rise
WINGHAM - Property taxes
in Wingham will rise by only
five per cent this year, under
a proposed budget which was
adopted by town council on
March 7.
This increase is the lowest
since 1978 when the increase
also was five per cent. Since
then taxes have gone up by
10.5 per cent (1979), 8.4 per
cent (1980), 14.6 per cent
(1981) and 10.5 per cent
(1982).
Finance Chairman Jack
Kopas said a number of
factors have contributed to
hold down the tax increase.
One is the provincial in-
flation restraint . program,
limiting municipal wage and
salary increases to five per
cent.
Another is the $64,000
surplus accumulated by the
town over the past two years.
A third is what he
described as "bare bones"
budgeting, while the fourth is
the "careful and selective.
utilization of various grant
programs," such as the
Ontario Neighboorhood
Improvement Program
which will contribute
$175,000 to streets and
selected other services over
. the next several years.
