Bonspiel held for student curlers On Saturday, March 5 the Maitland Curling Club was the scene of a very exciting bonspiel for the high school and public school students who have participated in this year's student curling. Although the weather was better suited for golfing, some 32 students came out for the day -long event. Prizes were arranged by the ladies' curling section and donated by various town businesses. Ann Duncan and her team of Mark Jeffrey, Suzi Takalo and Todd Rittenger took the top prize and were awarded the Kinsmen Club Trophy for 1983. They were also awarded curling brushes which were donated by the Maitland Curling Club. Second prize went to Paul Godley's team of Dave Shard, Rob, Cooke and Jim Allen. Stuart Davidson's rink took third spot. In the other closing event, the second draw winners were decided last Tuesday, with Mark Jeffrey's team coming out the winner over Dan Durst's. Mark's team consisted of Lori Takalo, Jason Garrett and his sister, Tanya Jeffrey. This team will be awarded a trophy at the school's awards assembly in June. This year, nearly 50 students from both the high school and elementary schools in town participated in the curling activities during the week. The students were organized and coached by Doug Bundy, Scott .Collins and Dan Durst from GDCI and Marty Bond and Sandra Braid from Robertson School as well as Joanne Lucas. The junior curling champions that we have had thin year and hope to have again in the future, come from the ranks of these student curlers.
