The Signal -Star Juveniles are notorious
late starters according to coach Doug
Cruickshank and Sunday they proved his
theory right.
Trailing by one game in the best -of -three
quarter final series, and facing
elimination here Sunday, the Stars waited
until the third period before getting its
offence in gear against Petrolia. They
scored three straight goals m a four
minute span to escape with a 5-4 win and
tie the series at one game apiece.
Petrolia won the first game of the series
4-1 on home ice Friday and the third and
deciding game of the series will be played
in Petrolia this Sunday at 4 p.m.
Cruickshank said that a quarter final
series must be at least a best -of -three
affair and the teams were unable to
complete • a best -of -five . series before
Sunday as required because of a lack of ice
time in Petrolia. So the series was reduced
to three games and Petrolia won the home -
ice advantage for the deciding game.
In the opening game of the series
Friday, Petrolia jumped on a sluggish Star
team in the opening minute of the game
and coasted to a 4-1 win. Petrolia scored
after just 1)8 seconds of play in the first
period, increased its lead to two goals
midway through the period and clinched
the win with single goals in the second and
third period. Goderich got its lohe goal late
in the first period with Dave Gallow
scoring from Del Bedard and Jeff Sargent.
Cruickshank said his team never really
got going in the first game. "The team just
never got started and (Dennis) Kerr kept
us in the game. There was only two guys
that played hockey," he said.
The game here Sunday was a little
different in that the Stars, again started
slow, but kept Petrolia within striking
distance until the offence got untrackedin
the final period. Petrolia, a fast -skating
team, could have putthe:.garneaway early
but Goderich killed off two penalties
before Petrolia scored on a powerplay
midway through the opening period.
Andrew Telford took a needless in-
terference penalty in the offensive zone
and Petrolia capitalized on the play.
By contrast, the Stars were pitiful on the
powerplay and blew a two-man advantage
late in the opening period.
Goderich finally tied the game early in
the second period as Paul McCartney
redirected a Phil Wood shot from the point
into the right hand corner of the net.

Late in the second period the Stars were
awarded a controversial goal after the
referee ruled that Petrolia netminder
Marty Souch pulled a Mark Crawford shot
out Of the net. The referee ruled,e puck
had crossed the line before Souch
retrieved it and awarded the go-ahead goal

After that, the Stars controlled play for
the next 10 minutes and scored three goals
in a four minute span. Andrew Telford put
Goderich ahead 3-2 with Scott Stoll and
Bedard assisting and then Wood boosted
Goderich into a two -goal lead with John
Peters and Keith Hallam assisting.
Sargent increased the Goderich lead to
three goals at 6.08 converting a pass from
Crawford and Tim Chisholm.
'Ahead by three goals, the Stars then
sagged and allowed Petrolia to score two
goals in less than a minute to reduce the
Goderich lead to a single goal with five
minutes remaining. A questionable
slashing penalty to the Stars' Dave Gallow
allowed Petrolia to score its fourth goal.
The Stars hung on however to record the
victory and force the deciding game in the
series.
