With the aid of a bank loan and a Student
Venture Capital Loan from the provincial
government,. Tory _is planning to set up her
own ..business called Goderich Wind-
surfing. As well as teaching people how to
windsurf, she will also sell windsurfing.
kequipment.. , •
Tory only became a windsurfer herself.
last June but is very enthusiastic about, the
sport After graduating . from Wilfrid .
,Laurier University in May, she answered
an ad and became a marketing employee
for windsurfing products. Her boss told her
that if she learned how to windsurf, she
could. also become an instructor. And so
that is whatshe did.
After six weeks, she was certified by the
International Windsurfer Sailing School
and began instructing others in the sport at
Northvliinds Windsurfing in Craigleith,
west of Collingwood.
Tory, describes windsuring as "just like
surfing but with a sail" and says it is a
sport that people can really catch onto
quickly.
"Once you can stay on the board, it just
takes practise," she explains, adding that
it took her six weeks to .become very
confident onthe board.
Tory...also says that windsurfing is not a
sport- that requires a lot of investment.
Once a person buys the basic windsurfing
board which retails for slightly more than
$1,000, the only additional equipment .
needed is. a wet suit. These suits must be
worn at -all times if the 'air or water is
below 70 degrees Farenheit.
"After you buy your equipment, all you
need is wind and water. You can attach
your board .right to your car and just go
wherever you want to," says Tory.
.She plans to stock the classic one -design
Windsurfer which is 12 feet long and 65.
pounds totally rigged with -a mast of 14
feet. • However,,'she will also have
brochures describing the rest of the line,
including wave jumping boards, and these •
can be ordered anytime. She: says she will
display her equipment at 47 Church Street
beginning May 20.
' The instruction end of the' business
probably won't start until June, depending
of course, on the weather. To set herself up
for instruction, Tory plans to invest in 10
boards and• will hire one other certified

national Windsurfer Sailing School blithe
world.
Tory says knowing how to swim isnot a
prerequisite for taking either of° these
courses and lifejackets will be provided.
She hopes to get permission from town
council to rope off an area in the Goderich
harbor .for. instruction. She prefers the
harbor instead of the beach side because it
is more sheltered, -When learning to
windsurf, she says the ideal condition is
wind without a lot of wave action.,.
To better acquaint people in the area
with the sport of windsurfing before
starting her business, Tory plans to set up
a display at the Goderich Sportsman Show
April 15• and 16 and the Grey -Bruce
Camping and Recreation Show April 22, 23
and 24. The'display will include some films
and a -simulator -(a board used on land
which simulates the action of, windsurfing
without the waves). Tory says she will also ••
be offering reduced rates at these shows to
persons who sign up for her courses before
June. For bookings or more information,
she can be reached at 524-9603 during the
day or 524-8936 m the evenings.
There are several 'reasons why Tory is
confident about setting up a windsurfing
business here. The first and foremost is the
sport's.. increasing popularity. It will be
introduced to the Olympics in 1984 and
Tory says, "If you can just get people on
the board and get them to sail about 100
. yards, they'll love it." .
The closest windsurfing schools to
Goderich are in Grand • Bend and" Port
Elgin. Tory explains that windsurfing is a
sport which people can catch .onto quickly
• and .one they want to try when they see
others doing it. Because of this fact, she is
.hoping to attract a lot of sulnmet tourists"
as customers.
Tory is depending heavily -on the
weather's co-operation for her new ven-
ture.
"I just know if it is sunny and warm, it
will be successful," she says confidently.

More warm weather?
Continuing warm' weather
could•.be a sign that we are in
for mare of , the same
throughout the year and
maybe even a repeat next
year.
Dr. Gunars Subins, a
geographer at Wilfrid
Laurier University, says we
could even be seeing the
start of what, climatologists
call"the Joseph effect."
The effect is named for the
biblical Joseph with his
prophetic dream of seven fat
years followed by seven lean
years.
"We could be seeing the
start of something similar
but I wouldn't count on it
lasting any seven years,"
Subins said. "The chances
are we could have a mild fall
and even another mild year
to follow." '
He says global weather
systems are huge and take
time to change. They can
stay too cold or too warm for
long periods- something like
a house heated with hot
water that stays hot long
after the furnace clicks off.
"And I wouldn't even
exclude the gloomy
prediction that we might
once again havean ice -age in
Canada. But we won't be
here to see it."
