Goderich team defeats
championship foursome
The Ontario Junior Men's . Curling
Champions for 1983 were crowned in
Barrie Saturday evening, with the Daniel
LaChance team from the Rockcliffe
Curling Club in Ottawa coming out on top
in the eight -team three-day event. •
The Rockcliffe team posted a record of
six wins and one losa to earn the right to
represent Ontario in the Pepsi-Cola Junior
Championships in Halifax at the end of
March.
The Scott Collins rink representing the
Maitland Curling Club in Goderich
finished in a three-way tie for fourth place
with a record of three wins and four losses:
However, the Goderich boys held the
distinction of being they only team todefeat
the championship Roc eliffe foursome. `
Going into the final round of the eight
team round-robin Competition, Rockcliffe
was undefeated with silt wins in lopsided
contests against teams from Nevi/market,
Woodville, Leamington, Grimsby, Orillia
and St. Georges (Toronto). St. Georges,
who had earlier defeated Goderich, was
still in the running at five and one, but
needed the help of -the Goderich team to
force a tie, provided that St. Georges could
win their game as well.,
Scott Collins and his teairf of Dan Durst,
Fraser pluyek end Mark Jeffrey did their
job...playing a superbly accurate takeout
game that had the Roekeliffe team WI.
tierved from the start. But, the St. Geroges
tent oattieitp against a hot rink from the
'York Curling Club in. Newmarket and
couldn't'vin their own gar .'
In the final contest between Goderich
and Rockcliffe, over 300 spectators were
treated to.a head -stopping display of cool
draws, sharp hits and delicate freezes.
Nearly all of the onlookers were cheering
for Scott and the boys, with a large con-
tingent of Goderich parents and friends
leading the applause and waving the Port
of Goderich flag at every opportunity.
The two teams traded points every end,
but a miss on a wide-open take-out by the
Rockcliffe skip on the ninth end put Collins
two ahead coming home.
"It looked pretty sate at the time," said
Doug Bundy, their coach who had ac-
companied the team to Barrie "But some
cold draws by the Rockcliffe team soon
had the house cluttered with rocks from
both. sides."
"Skip Collins came through with his
final stone, however, and took out both
Roekeliffe stones and left his own shot to
clinch the victory. It was a triumph for the
Goderich team anda credit to their curling
ability and coolness under fire!" .
"I'm very proud of these young gen-
dollen," said Bundy. "They were Coil-
tinually congratulated on their good
sportsmanship throughout the tournanittit
'and the fact that two of the games theylost
were close 54 decisions meant that they
were close to being second best in the
province!"
Providing that„aiternatd arrangetnents
can be made for school eatains, the boys'
nett competition will bethe WOSSA 'finals
in Glencoe on March 10, in which the rink
will re resent WO as the Ruroi Perth
thmriplons.
