SECOND SECTION
Juveniles win first
The Goderich Signal -Star Juveniles are
breathing a sigh of relief today after
eliminating Strathroy in the first round of
Ontario Minor Hockey Association
playoffs here Sunday.
It's not that the Stars consider them-
selves fortunate to have advanced beyond
the first round of playoffs. Rather, they
have at least escaped the physical assault
of the Strathroy team, an assault they,
endured over the four games of the best -of -
five series.
Goderich did not lose a game in the
series, but a tie in the second game forced
an extra game here Sunday. While the
Stars easily handled Strathroy in two
Shamrock League games this season, the
playoff provided a different scenario.
The Stars won the first game of the
series in overtime, after tying the game in
the final minute of play. The teams played
to a tie in the second game and in the third
game, the Stars again tied the score in the
final minute of play and went on to win 9-6
in overtime. The Stars wrapped the series
with a 4-1 victory before an emotional
crowd here Sunday.
In the third game of the series in
Strathroy Tuesday, Goderich tied the
game with 15 seconds remainittg in
regulation time and then scored three
goals in the 10 -minute overtime to win 9-6.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first
period with Jeff Sargent scoring for the
Stars on the powerplay. Strathroy then
outscored Goderich 2-1 in the second
period to carry a 3-2 lead into the final
,period. Mark Crawford scored the Stars'
lone second period goal on the powerplay.
The goals came free and easy in the final
period as Strathroy increased its lead to 4-
2 only to have Goderich roar back with two
goals in less than a minute by Paul
McCartney and Tim Chisholm to tie the
score.
Strathroy then scored twice in a 30
second span to regainits two -goal bulge
with nine minutes left in the game.
Goderich pulled within one on a goal by
Phil Wood with 6.36 remaining in the game
and the Stars forced the overtime on
Crawford's second goal with 15 seconds
remaining in regulation time.
''''' " " Goderich struck -for' -the first goal in.the
10 -minute overtime period with Sargent
scoring after .converting a pass from
linemates Dave Gallow and Crawford.
Strathroy then indulged in a rash of
penalties that resulted in goals by Wood
and Dave McDonald.
The final game of the series here Sunday
was as physical as the three games
preceeding it but again Goderich took
advantage of inane Strathroy behaviour
that resulted in a rash of penalties.
Goderich opened the scoring midway
through the first period as Andrew Telford
beat Strathroy goaltender Bob Ledingham
to the puck and putin the top corner. That
lead held until the final minute of the first
period when Don Lyons beat Dennis Kerr
to score the only Strathroy goal of the
game.
The Stars enjoyed several manpower
advantages in the second period but the

powerplay produced few good scoring
opportunities. Dave Gallow finally put
Goderich ahead midway through the
period on a "gift" goal. Following a faceoff
in the Strathroy end a Strathroy player
flipped the puck into the slot where Gallow
intercepted the pass and rifled a wrist shot
to the lower corner.
Wood then added an insurance goal in
the final minute of the period after taking a
pass from MCCartney, moving into the slot
day as the Goderich juvenile team put the
pressure on. (Photos by Dave Sykes)
Dennis Kerr was not tested often in the
Goderich net, but made some key saves
when Strathroy managed to generate a
little offence.
and beating Ledingham with a wrist shot.
Jeff Feagan closed out the scoring in the
final period banging a rebound past the
Strathroy goalie after three minutes of
play.
Strathroy again took the bulk of the
penalties, but while they resorted to
senseless physical abuse, the Stars
remained relatively cool and took few
retaliatory penalties.
Coach Doug Cruickshank said he .was
pleased with the way his club acted in the
series. However, the coach does not know
who and when the. Stars will be playing
next.
Figure Skating Club will present Ice Nicks '83
Canadian Novice Dance Champions,
Debbie Horton and Curtis Moore will be
making a special guest appearance with
the Goderich Figure Skating Club this
Saturday when the club presents its Ice
Nicks '83 show.
The show, which will take place on
Saturday, February 26 at the Goderich
Arena, is being presented so the club
members can show the public what they
have learned during the past year.
This year, the theme of the show is My
Kind of Country. Guitar players, square
dancers, can can girls and Indian maidens
are just a few of the acts which will be
presented.
During the past few weeks Mrs. Fran
Brady and Miss Margaret Dupee, the club
professionals, •have been busy not only
teaching the skaters, but also arranging
the choreography and music. The music
they have chosen consists mostly of
traditional western and square dance
numbers.
Parents and board members have also
been helping the skaters get ready fot' the
big event. They have been busy sewing
costumes and adding feathers, sequins and
fringe which will add sparkle and certainly
catch the eye of the country gentleman,
when he sees the can can girls.
The show will run for two -and -a -half to
three hours and there will be two per-
formances. The first will take place at 2
p.m. while the second show will begin at
7:30 p.m.
There will be door prizes awarded to
some lucky spectators and the draw for a
quilt will also be made that night.
My Kind of Country should provide good
entertainment for the whole family.

on a power play while the Goderich team
had a penalty, the only penalty of the
period•
In the second period, Strathroy opened
up with three quick goals before Jason
O'Neill scored on a pass from Darren
Doak. Strathroy scored once more and
O'Neill scored his second goal on a nice set
up from Doak. Fach team served only one
penalty in this period.
In the third period, the Goderich team
went to lunch while Strathroy had a field
day. In the first half of the: period,
Strathroy punched in four goals before
Goderich was able to score again, number
two goal by Sideris assisted by Doak. Then
Todd (Gretzky) Gilchrist picked up a pass
from Dave Telford in his own end, swept
down the right boards by,. several Strathroy
players and using teammate Richard
Bodily as a decoy, stickhandled around the
last defenceman, deked the goalie and
flipped the puck , into thetop mesh.
Strathroy went -on to score two additional,.
goalswh lenGadericpj 'yed bard but just
couldn't come up with anything more.
Certainly the Goderich boys played
improved hockey in their 'last four games.
Had they performed as well in the earlier
part of the season, their record would have
been better.
1 would suggest that part of their
problem was the number_ of_roadgames at
the beginning of the season. This plus the
fact that about three home games in the
first half were cancelled also. The" boys
really never had the right circumstances
to have wins and gain self-confidence in
the earlier part of the season.
The Bantams play their next hockey
game in a Shamrock tournament at
Ilderton on Sunday, March 6. .
