Old Deckhands win their division
The Goderich Old Deckhands oldtimers
hockey team may be accused of being
inipolite hosts.
• The Old Deckhands, hosting their fourth
international oldtimers hockey tour-
nament here on the weekend, also played
some impressive hockey that earned the
local old stars a gold medal in the four -
team Lakeport Division.
• Fourteen teams participated in the
fourth annual oldtimers tournament in
three divisions, in a round;robin format.
Due to an increased interest in the tour-
nament, officials Opened up the entries by
two more teams this year.
The Goderich Old Deckhands swept
through the Lakeport Division without a
loss in four :tournament games and
defeated defending champion, Lambeth
Blues 8-2 in the division championship
Sunday to capture the gold medal. In the
final -game of the division round-robin
series, Goderich and Lambeth tied 3-3 to

as Goderich jumped into a One -goal lead
and then traded goals with Lambeth. The
Old Deckhands held a one -goal lead after
the first period on a goal by Hary
Livingston with Cliff McDOnald and Ken
Daer assisting.
Goderich increased its lead to two goals
on a Ken Daer goal in the second period
but Lambeth replied with a goal to narrow
the Goderich lead to 2-1 heading into the
final period.
Goderich regained, its two -goal lead in
the final period on a 'goal by Larry Boyd
after just four Minutes of play. Lambeth
got right back in the game less than
minute later on Ken Cooke's second goal of
the game but Goderich held on to win the
gold medal in the Lakeport Division.
In the four -team round robin, Goderich
won two games and tied one. On Friday,
Harold Leddy scored two goals to lead
Goderich to a 5-2 win over Kitchener.
Wayne Doak, Buck Million and Paul
Draper scored one goal apiece.
In its second game, Goderich jumped
into a 3-1 first -period lead and coasted to a
7-2 win over Guelph.. Don' Elliott led the
offence with two goals while Ken Lee, Jack
Meriam, Wayne Doak; Buck Million and
Larry Boyd added one goal apiece.
The third game against Lambeth
provided the toughest test for either team.
Each team scored one goal in each period -
•
to produce a 3-3 tie and set the stage for the
championship game.
• Hary Livingston, Don Masse and Ken
Daer scored the Goderich goals.
Goderich's Ken Daer was also awarded
the trophy as the most valuable player in
the Lakeport Division. Meanwhile,
Lambeth Blues goaltender, Roy Smith was
acknowledged as the top goaltender in the
tournament. Smith, who played in three
tournament games for Lambeth, allowed
only three goals against for a healthy and
sitngy 1.00 average.
In the Bedford Arms Divison, Kin-
cardine scored four goals in the final
period to whip the Hamilton Krazy
Kanucks 8-3 to win the gold medal.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first
period but Kincardine pulled into a 4-2 lead
after two periods and scored four goals in a
three-minute span in the final period to
turn the game into a rout.
Ron Boulton sparked the Kincardine
offence with a three -goal perforrnace in

Kincardine reached the final with a9-1
win over Guelph in the final game of the
five -team round robin series. Boulton
again provided the offensive leadership
with three goals. In its first game Kin-
cardine tied Lambeth Canadians 3-3 and
its second game Saturday morning,
Kincardine and Hamilton played to a 3-3
• tie. Kincardine's Ron Boutlon was selected
as the division's most valuable player in
the tournament.

defeated the London Blues 2-0 in the
championship game to win the division

Lakeside Grain defeated .Zurich 4-3, the
London Fire Birds 7-2 and Port Stanley 7-3

' medalists, were also awarded the tour-
nainent sportsmanship trophy on behalf of
the committee.

During. the regular , season the Stars
easily disposed of Strathroy in the only two •
meetings between the teams. The playoff
series, however, has been a different
story. Either Strathroy is playing ex-
tremely well or the Stars have been, flat.
Coach Doug Cruickshank says it's a litt*
of both.
"Dennis Kerr kept us in the game. He,
played a super game," Cruickshank said.
"My team has not been playing up tb par
and there's no reason they should be that
flat."

When the- Goderich Legion Midgets take
to the ice here Friday, February 18 at,
pan. in the third game of their OMHA
playoffs series with Strathroy, they are go7
ing to have toPlay better than they have m
the first two games, or their hopes of ad-
vancing to the next round will be ended.
The Legionnaires, lost the second game
of the series 5-2 in Strathroy on Saturday,
February 12 and that, along with their 4-2
loss in the first game, puts their backs
against the wall in the best -of -five series.
This series was expected to be a close
one, based On the regular season games •
between the two teams. Strathroy won
their first two games by one goal, the third
was tied and Goderich won their final
Meeting 7-3. However,' in the playoff series
it has bewail Strathroy so far.
The Strathroy team outtkated and
outhustled the locals on Saturday, grabb-
ing a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period
on goals by Rob Slegers, Tom Jackson and
Albert Weerts. The second and third
Strathroy goals came on power plays.
The Legionnaires got one back when Rob
was 'declared. It Marked the second
conceptive game the teams battled into
overtnne.
The Stars were first to generate some
offence scoring after just four minutes of
play with " captain Del Bedard scoring
while the - Stars , were shorttanded.
Strathroy tied the score just 30 seconds
interim the same power play.
Goderich regained the lead two minutes
later aa,DaveGallow scored on the power
play after converting ' a pass from
litleMateS John Peters and Jim Mathers,
Strathroy tied the.score in the final minute
of the first period as Joe Slegers scored
while Goderich enjoyed the man ad-
vantage.
Both teams had their chances to put the
game away but goaltending played a key

Brent Williamson pulled the Legion-
anire.s10 within one goal of the lead when
he scored on aPlay set up by defenceman
Daryl Madge after he kept .the puck in at
the Strathroy blueline, five minutes into
the third period.,
However Strathroy's Jim
Vanderheyden put the lights out for the
Legionnaires by scoring two goals in less
than a minute midway through the period.
The first came when Vanderheyden was
left uncovered and giVen kinds of time
to shoot from the top of the circle to the left
of Goderich goalie Randy Gaynor. The
other goal was the result of a goal -mouth
scramble.
Goderich coach Larry Jeffrey and
manager Dick Madge are hoping their
team can get back into the series by play-
ing the kind of hockey they are capable of,
beginning Friday, February 18 at 8 p.m.

the score. Chris Sideris scored two, one
assisted by Kevin Talbot, and the other
assisted by Kevin Telford. Darcy McGee

At this point the game could have gone in
favour of Goderich because the boys were
playing strong hockey and disorganizing

In the third period Strathroy came out
and scored a quick goal to make it 5-3.
Chris Sideris answered with his third goal
assisted by Kevin Talbot to narrow the

From this point on the Goderich- team
just couldn't seem to "buy" a goal while
Strathroy scored two more.
Pee Wees fall two behind
The Goderich Lions Pee Wees fell two
games. behind Strathroy in their best of
five series when they lost 9-3 in Strathroy
on the weekend.
The Goderich team had leads of 1-0 and
2-1 in the first period but Strathroy came
back with three goals in the second period
for a 4-2 edge.
A complete collapse occurred in the
third period as Strathroy scored five
straight goals to earn their victory.
Goderich point getters were Scott
Garrow with two goals and one assist, Bill
Whetstone with one goal and one assist and
Bill Trebish, Byron Bowman,. and Jeff
Boyce with a single assist each.

The Goderich'Machinist Atoms won the
first game of their best of three °MBA:,
playoff series against Stoneybrook 3-2 in
Stoneybrook on Saturday. The game wag

Jeff Hodges opened up the scoring, for
Goderich in. the first Period with an, assist
from ' Richard Bowman. But. With
minute left in the first period, StorfeybpOok

scored half way through the third period.

Goderich with an assist from Chris O'Neill

Juniors overpower Bears

The GDCI junior Vikings over -powered
the Seaforth Golden Bears in Htwon-Perth
boys' basketball action here Thurgday,
February 10 by a score of 69-27. The vic-
tory gives the Vikings a 5-1, won -lost
record in league play.
The, Vildngs totally dominated the genie
throughout and led 41-12 at half time.
Coach Lynn Meyers' Vikings used a full -
court, man-to-man defence in the first half
and then went to an effective zone press in
the third quarter.
Peter Conlon with 16 points, 'John
Thompson, with 13, Shawn Rahbek with 11
and Daryl Mack, with 10, were all in
double figures for the Vikings.
Kevin Feagan added five, Tim Bakker
and Dave Almasi had four points each and
Andrew Carruthers, Travis Bell and
Grant Townsend got two points apiece.
Barry "Bear" Campbell led Seaforth
with 14 points.
Almasi and Black led the Vikings in
rebqunding while Thompson and Conlon
led the aggressive Vikings in defensive
hustle.
