the first day of Lent. In a
certain way, the "Ashes"
ceremony in which the priest
signs the forehead of the
person with ashes, sums up
the meaning of Lent. Here is
what it says to us:
1. Receiving the Ashes is
our way of acknowledging
something we are usually not
anxious to think about:
death: Deep in our hearts we
know perfectly well that one
day this cherished body of
ours will dissolve into its
chemical elements and
become a little pile of dust.
Very few of us care to think

seriously about death,
especially our own.
2, The acceptance of the
fact of death for one whohas
faith Is, .not a fatalistic at-
titude ..towards ' something
unpleasant we cannot avoid.
We recognize this ifwe
analyse our, sorrow at the
death of a beloved pet. What
hits us hardest is that we will
never see it again. Not so
with us! Our faith gives us
the firm conviction that one
day our body will rise again
... as Martha said: "on the
last day", It will be raised up
to- be re -united with our
immortal soul.

3 Our faith takes us one
big step further. It makes it
very ,clear that what our
eternal life shall, be after
death depends directly upon
a choice we make in this life•,
whether we are to seek God
and keep His VOW
mandments, or seek our own.
selfish goals and try to get
along without God, For we
are assured that only' those
who keep God's laws will
enter the Kingdom of
Heaven.
The season of Lent calls
upon us to face the fact that
we must choose God or lose
everything. The words of
Jesus are strong: "What
does it profit a man to gain
the whole word'd and suffer
theloseof'h%omit?
ObservingLent;
Traditionally, use of ashes
has been a symbol of sorrow
for sin. In facet in Lent we are
called upon not only to
repent of our i but also to
do penances pr them. We
are also called to practice
voluntary self-denial as a
means, of strengthening our
wins against future temp-
tations. Fasting, giving up of
legitimate pleasures during
Lent, abstaining from
certain more appealing food
and drink; these are Lenten
practices that go back to the
very beg innings. of
