GDCI junior team in basketball championship series
by TD
The GDCI junior girls' basketball team
are in the midst of the Huron -Perth Con-
ference championship series this week.
The Vikings began the best -of -three finals
yesterday J Tuesday) in Seaforth. The se-
cond game of the series is here tomorrow
(Thursday) with game three also here, if
necessary, next Tuesday.
The Vikings advanced to the finals by
doubling up on Listowel, 46-23, here last
Wednesday in sudden -death semi-final
play. Seaforth battled their way into the
finals by edging St. Marys, 46-42, in the
other semi-tinal.
The Vikings win over Listowel began as
a tight, playoff -type game but the Vikings'
superiority began to become evident as the
game wore on. Goderich led 6-4 after one
quarter, but had a 21-10 lead by half time
and led 30 -18 after three quarters.
Kim Fritzley topped the Viking offensive
output with 25 points. She also provided
leadership on defence with some ' key
steals.
Christine Stapleton had nine points, but
her domination of the game in the Vikings'
defensive zone was her main contribution.
Cathie Gallew had eight points for
Goderich, seven of them in the second
quarter when the issue was being decided.
Other Viking scorers were Melaine Jef-
frey with two points and Mary Murphy and
Tammy Gibbons, with one each. Murphy
played what Viking coach Phil Bugler call-
ed her best game of the season, hauling
down rebounds and showing great hustle
on defence. Gibbons had a strong defen-
sive game too, and made some fine passes
to set up key Viking baskets.
Pat Rutherford was a standout for
Listowel, getting 17 of her team's 23 points.

ibitic n game on weekend
The Goderich Lions Pee Wees improved
their league season record to five wins and
one loss last Saturday as they defeated St.
Marys 6'3.
Scott Garrow went on a scoring spree
tallying five times tG supply the offence.
Garrow also assisted on Greg Alcock's
single marker.
This was probably the locals' poorest
outing of the ses son as they sputtered
throughout most of the contest.
Lions defenceman Larry Leppington,
centre Bill Trebish and goalie Greg
Townsend proved to be the defensive
stalwarts in this game.
On Friday night the local fans were
treated to some fast Pee Wee hockey as the
Lions took a 5-1 lead and were able to hang
on to a 5-3 victory over South London
Minor Pee Wees.
As in Saturday's game, Garrow led the
off enee with a goal and a four assists while
linemates Bill Whetstone and Greg Alcock
had two goals and an assist to round out
the scoring. Tom Durnin in net for
Goderich had a strong outing, especially in
the last five minutes.
The Lions this weekend play host to
Parkhill, the' team they will probably have
to defeat for top spot.
Old rivalries continue
Curling League begins ninth season
BY GEORGE SUTTON
Old rivalries continued and new . ones
blossomed as the ninth year of Goderich
Industrial ' League Curling began on
Remembrance Day 1982. The Foresters
and Local 1863 faced each other on opening
night for the third year- in a row and the
competition belied the. fact that this was
their first contest of the season. Fine ef-
forts by the union, foursome resulted in
their winning most of the games ends but
clutch .curling by the champion Foresters
allowed them to take the game into this
year's first extra end. Jack Kellough and
Glen Falkiner provided 1863's leadership
but Cam Bogie's cool draw to an open
house with his last shot of the evening gave
theForesters the victory and a one-eighth
shareof first place.
Equal coolness was not shown by the
skip of the GDCI Teacher No. 1 unit in the
night's second extra end contest. The
GDCI Teachers carried a two point advan-
tage in the final end against the student
representatives, the GDCI Vikings. A
superb draw behind the only cover
available by Viking skip Scott Collins
followed by a draw into the wide open
house allowed the students to fight back
for a tie. In the extra end: the Vikings did
not miss while Teacher skip George Sutton.
did. Result: Students 7 - Teachers 5.
The third grudge match pitted the town's
medical and health ( not necessarily the
same thing you know) units against each
other with a -lawyer thrown in for proper

flawless performance, on behalf of his.
client, the AM&G Hospital team, resulted
in a verdict of 9 to 4 over the Huron County
Health Unit. The final score however.
hides valuable evidence. The games out-
come actually rested on the final shot of
the night. Health Unit skipJack MacKin-
non, himself a graduate of George Sutton's
"Curling Under Pressure" clinic. missed
his final shot that if made would have caus-
ed the night's third extra end game.
MacKinnon and Sutton were observed
later discussing the best way to say -I'm
sorry" to their teammates.
A new rivalry was obviously brewing on
ice four as well as two new Industrial
League entries showed their stuff. The
"Super Shell" partnership of Edward,
Bissett and Harrison had their debut spoil-
ed by the feisty Canadian Legion reps Tom
Profit, Jim Bell and Gerry Walters.
The final five to four outcome illustrates
the evenness of these two competitors but
a special compliment must go to the
Legion foursome for winning their first
match despite a very busy day on behalf of.
Canada's war veterans.
The Sifto miners had their ups and
downs on. this opening day with the
veterans "Maniacs" coming up big while
the newly' entered "Elevators" dropped
their match. Jerry Riseborough led his
"Maniacs" skillfully as they had a difficult
time defeating Victoria and Grey seven to
five. Fran Fisher ( Brenda. Tiechert's
sister-in-law) and Cathy Hamilton i Bren-
da Tiechert's friend) both curled well and.
Rennie Armstrong provided excellent
leadership for the much improved V & G
-foursome.
Tim Colwell and the Sifto "Elevators"
were not as lucky as their co-workers as'
they ran into the hot and hungry Elemen-
tary Teachers. Racy Ron Ritchie and
"Dangerous Doig" Budnark provided
much of the punch for, their fine team as
they scored big in crucial situations for
the nine to six win while Peggy Fisher and.
Jan Ginn added an additional touch of
class to the league.
Two of the classiest teams over the
years have been comprised of ladies. The
Lady Golfers and Lady Foresters both
returnee to competition in 1982 and one of
them is glad they did. The talented Lady
Foresters. behind the "cool -handed" Berl.
nice Moore 'and hard shooting Vicki
Culbert, overpowered the Champion Office
"Silver Brooms" despite excellent efforts
by Karen Gilchrist and Paul Mulligan. The
Lady Golfers. however. found themselves
in a different boat. The GDCI Teachers No.
2 foursome of Warr. Connor. Garrow and
Cloet were very sharp and relentless in
their pursuit of an initial triumph. The
shorthanded trio of Sully. Duncan and
White were unable to generate an attack or
get a break on this opening night but the
season is just beginning and who will
remember the night of November 11. 1982.
