Teachers
visit Bruce
County
About 50 elementary
teachers from this area
spent their Professional
Development Day Friday,
November 5 in Bruce Coun-
ty. This particular day was
planned for and financed by
the Teachers' Federations.
Some teachers visited the
Bruce Nuclear Plant. They
got a tour and could observe
first hand the construction
taking place. They also had
the workings of a nuclear
plant explained.
Many primary teachers
visited St. Anthony's
Separate School in Kincar-
dine. Here they saw an in-
dividualized reading pro-
gram that was strongly bas-
ed on reading materials the
children themselves wrote.
Another group of teachers
were introduced to Bruce
County's Outdoor Education
Program by its co-ordinator
Clark Birchard. He outlined
the aims of the program and
what sites are used. Various
uses of Bruce -County's Out-
door -Centre-were seen • in .a
slide presentation.
In the afternoon everyone
visited the Agripark. This
was to be a complex of
greenhouses heated by
steam, a by-product from
the nearby_ nuclear plant. It
was announced that the
greenhouses were to be shut
down in four weeks because
the government agencies
would not back the project
any longer.
The remaining teachers
chose'to attend a conference
in London on exceptional
children., They were able to
hear specific speakers on
their particular areas of in-
terest or expertise.
