I want to tell you a bit
about an interesting, busy
man named Les Kimber of
Calgary, Alberta.
Les is the son-in-law of a
very nice lady many of you
know - Irene Sparks - wife of
Ross Sparks now
(deceased). Les is married
to Joyce, Irene's beautiful
daughter.
Les Kimber, production
manager on the movie
"Mother Lode" has had over
20 years experience in most
capacities of film production
in Canada and the United
States. A partial list of his
credits both as production
manager and associate
producer includes: "Death
Hunt" starring Lee Marvin
and Charles Bronson", "To
Elvis with Love";
Paramounts "Ski Lift. to
Death"; "Locusts"; Dino. De
Laurentis'. "ORCA"; "Buf-
falo Bill and the Indians";
"Superman", on which
Kimber served as produc-
tion manager on the Cana-
dian unit; "Pioneer
Woman", starring William
Shatner; "Prime Cut", star-
ring Lee Marvin; "Amber
Waves" produced by TIME
LIFE FILMS, starring Den-
nis Weaver, and "Wild Horse
Hank" starring Linda Blair
and Richard Crenna.
• Les told Fred Haencker of
the Calgary Herald in an.
interview: As 'production
manager 1 would make deals
for the land, organize the
hotel situation and hire the
technical crew. I'm also
responsible for the day to
day running of • the
production and the setting up
of the shooting schedule'." •
Movie making is a
glamorous occupation and
Les Kimber• is one of only
half a dozen or so, motion
picture. production
managers' in Canada. He
spends a lot of time an-
swering questions on movies
and "live",Theatre.
A native Calgarian, he
started as an actor in the mid
1950s and discovered there
was a shortage of technical,
people' while he toured with .
the stage productions . in
Canada and. the United
States. In .early 1960, he
returned to Calgary to work -
as producers Stage manager
and actor for the 'Allied
Arts' Centre, the "MAC 14 '
Society" and finally.
"Theatre Calgary".
His. first feature film,
Naked—•._Flames"_.. vas. a.
Canadian picture shot in the •
area of Cosmore, over 20
years ago. •
"I ended up as prop
manager", sajrs Les, "that
movie went down the
drain." "At one point we had
to MOVE the interior of the
`Paris Tea Room, QUT of
Banff, overnight."
• Kimber was involved in
more than 300 stage plays
but found movies gave
more scope.
"With a motion picture,
the whole world is a stage",
he says. He kept in touch
with films and corking
locally, • produced
travelogues, but it "wasn't
until 1969 that Arthur Penn's
"Little Big Man' gave him a
chance, to break into major
features, as Most of this was
t,shot in the foothills west of
Calgary.
As manager. of Canadian
.productions, he learned
many 'tricks of the trade'
from the picture's overall
production managers: 15n
Hollywood "productions, one
worked with some of the best
technicians • in the world.
Th'ir ing bac% on some of the-
-movies,
e--movies, Kimber said -the
Canadian film, 'Wild Horse
Hank', with Linda Blair, -
finished up in Dinosaur
Provincial Park and
Nevada, U.S.A.-In the block-
buster "Superman", an old"
farmhouse in Blackie,
Alberta functions as the
"Man of Steel's' boyhood
home. In this movie there
were more than 100 people
dragging along all over
Alberta.
