patient in St. Joseph's
Hospital, London, has
returned to her home in Port
Albert.
Carmen Hayden, retired
area farnier, reports corn in
this area is of good quality
and the price still remains
low. Weather conditions
couldn't be better for
harvesting the grain and get-
ting the fall plowing done.
Many cottagers returned
to the village to spend the
weekend and enjoy the
warm sunshine and the
beautiful fall colours.
Tom Livingstone, a resi-
dent of Port Albert and a
member of Circle City
Toastmasters Club in
Goderich, was one of the
speakers at their recent
meeting held at the Maitland
Golf Club. His topic was,
"How Great Thou Art", us-
ing those words to describe
the early pioneers and the
great advances 'man has
made in less than 150 years.
Toastmasters is a club
where one can improve his
ability to give a prepared
speech and to speak on a
given topic on a two -minute
warning. Members also
study parliamentary pro-
cedure. Guests are welcome
to attend the meetings: The
next meeting of the club will
be November 3 at 6 p.m. at
the Maitland Golf Club.
Tom Livingstone, who was
one of the Charter members
of the, Kitchener -Waterloo
Club, will attend its 25th an-
niversary Saturday, October
30 at the Granite Club in Kit-
chener.
Fishing
Many anglers line the
banks of the Nine Mile River
at Port, Albert these days,
coming from Walpole Island,
SeaLc-ad o rr a -n d
Woodstock. In an interview
with several fishermen Fri-
day, they report that
Thursday was good. Friday
until 10 a.m. had been poor.
Saturday morning, fishing
was good for Scott
Westecott, age 14 and his 14 -
year -old brother Raymond
from Kingsbridge who were
walking around the
downtown area of the village
with a 14 pound salmon
which they had just caught.
Roy Bellinger, Con-
servation Officer, reports
that fishing in Bayfield has
been quite good. At a recent
fishing contest held at
Bayfield, the largest fish
caught was a Rainbow
weighing 10 pounds, one oz.
Advance Poll
Advance poll for the up-
coming election in Ashfield
Township will be held this
Saturday from 9 a.m. until 8
p.m. at the home of the
Township Clerk Donald
Simpson, R.R. 3, Goderich,
Lot 9, concession 13, Ashfield
Township.
The last time Port Albert
had a representative on
council was in 1950. At that
time Elmer Graham was
Reeve. Elmer Draper,
village resident, has allowed
his name to stand and • is
seeking the office of
township councillor.
History
There are many stories of
early days in Ashfield
Township. When the
pioneers went to Goderich,
they carried their shoes to
save them until they were
near the town. Similarly,
people coming to
Kingsbridge from a
distance, donned their shoes
just before reaching the
church. Sometimes religious
demands called for unusual
