„ hristmas Country Fair's 17t Mrs. Wilmer 1-faiedy and her assistants led their 17th nnual Christmas Country 'air to a successful climax his past week. On Wednesday, October 20, in spite of the rainy weather, they had a good crowd and many of those with booths said they were satisfied with the buying. On Saturday, it was a lovely day outside but not as large a crowd and therefore not as profitable as Wednesday. But generally most were satisfied. There was splendid COLBORNE CDFNER. ®ortrudo Keating, 15E4012076 patronage for the food, such as the homemade baking and canned goods, fresh vegetables and apples and many stopped for a cup of tea, a light lunch or even a meal. Seventeen years is a long time for something like this to carry on and each year be even bigger and better, but that is exactly what has hap- pened and a note of praise is in order at this time to Mrs. Saying- has scientific basis Remember the old saying - "you're only as young as you feel.'' Well it may be a scien- tific fact. A group of scientists have come up with a study that shows close links • between how you rate your health, and how long you will live. The study, in Manitoba, of more than 3,000 people aged 65 and older has shown that people who rate their health as poor are three times as likely to die as are those who rate their health as good. ".This does not mean that if a person has positive feel- ings about his health he will live to be 100, although it would be nice if this were true," cautions Jana Mossey, co-author of the study published in the cur- rent issue of the American Journal of Public Health. But when a. person reports his health is just so-so, •it should signal doctors and nurses to be "a little more attentive" because the per- son is at high risk, Mossey said in an interview from Philadelphia,. where she's on staff at Temple University School of Medicine. Mossev. an epidemiologist, was on staff • at the University of Manitoba, where her col- league Evelyn Shapiro still works, during the late '70s when they did the study. The scientists have several interpretations of the link between your rating of your own health and death. One of them is that the per- son who doesn't smoke, drinks only moderately and gets enough• exercise, good nutrition and rest may have a more positive view of their own health, while the reduc- ed risk may be due to these good habits. Another is that even if in fact theperson's health status is not terrific, there's something protective in positive, optimistic feelings. Mossey says she has a gut feeling "those who are characteristically optimistic may do better," but she cau- tions there's no scientific data to support that impres- sion so far. A sure way to feel good about your health is to be a nonsmoker. And- it yrou want help to quit smoking - on your own - ask the staff of the Huron -Perth Lung Asocia- tion about their FREEDOM. Wear a'safe costume Hallowe'en safety begins with a "be seen costume", according to the Ontario Association of Optometrists. "There is a way to add•an edge ofsafety to purchased or made -at-home costumes", Dr. Garry Grant, President of the organization says. Tbat edge is retro-reflec' ave material. Optometric . studies have found that " retro -reflective material is sufixly visible even at speeds of 70 and 80 m.p.h. • Retro -reflective mataial is available in either iron -on or sew -on fabrics and tape, so yoiinister§ "can "iiiil a up their own designs..
