Martha Rathburn Our Canadian Thanksgiv- ing weekend will be here before you know it - like the 9th, 10th and llth of this month. Truthfully - I am about the only one you will run into that is surprised. This great weather makes you forget that the bad weather isn't too far away. Try to get outside while you can and enjoy it. - Our big tree - the one at South and Elgin - has chang- •ed from dry to dark leases since we had a few rains. It is still dark green - but any time now it will.start to get lighter in color, until it is as light as it will be when the leaves come out in the spr- ing. That tree must be about 108 years old - Aerhapsmore. The Reverend U. Stewart of Seaforth has celebrated hit 100th birthday and he was just a youngster when he and his father planted it there. His father. had stone from the Maitland River hauled in for the main part of that lovely house at- that corner and to bring a bit of Saltford with .them, they dug 'up a young beech tree and planted it on THAT corner. It would be nice if we could think about that happening, think of all the pleasure it has given hundreds of people who have been able to enjoy the changes of colors and the growth and shape ' of that beautiful tree. I believe it is the only one 'of its kind in Goderich. It is odd that a -person can get such a THING about an old tree - but you must remember I • have been fascinated 'by it since 1947, have been amazed by the definite : changes in color from light to very dark and back again. The trees all change but "green is green" and there is nothing .too ' ex- citing about THAT. So take a little more notice and enjoy it with me. We are in a "color" district - we don't really need to go to James Bay or Other faraway places to enjoy the color parade. We have Lots of it here. . Before I go wandering; I'd better tell you the Little Theatre memberships are on sale and if your usual member doesn't contact you soon, call Maureen Penn at 524-2308 or - during the day Ruth Leonard at 524-7806 is handy. Also, remember way back in Little,Theatre when Jack Wright was master of the lites? Jack and. Evelyn will be in town this weekend I the tenth).. Ruth can tell you about it, also. I'm due for a trip to Little Lakes -• the colors there are usualy fantastic with the reflections in'the dark quiet water. Take notice that you can't see . the two lakes together - you look at one, then the other. The one with the stumps has greatly - im- proved - it has more water in it now. This is because the road had. big improvements a few years back. I don't know if there are any turtles in the bigger lake now - I haven't seen any for some time. I still wish the "Powers -that -be" could enlarge a spot near the lakes for parking and enjoying the scenery. Throughout Ontario there are mane spots - sometimes just room for one or two cars - but it gives you a chance to stop and gaze for a . few - - - Rfivrxut sr Wheat _.,.__-...fuHerf-care==~wrtravely-titYre-`_°-.' to sit and stare. -". So let's pull for a "'staring" place - there's -a.-dandy spot out there. real close to the lakes. In the spring, the woods nearby are teasing you to come in - bring a iunch - I'll probably get shot for this suggestion - but - if we can enjoy the area a little more•,'I think it would be wonderful. Talk it up - maybe you have some influence? Let's, enjoy our nice countryside all we can - we may have more time on our hands. Have a care • Love: Martha.
