Plowing Match near Lucan. The competition for MPs was part of the special events in-
cluding MPPs and wardens and regional chairmen.
Robinson keeps Huron con top
By Stephanie Levesque •
"Keeping Huron on top" is how the county's
warden, Harold.' Robinson of Howick Township ex-
plained his win in the plowing ' competition for
wardens and regional chairmen at the International
Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show. •
Held at Lucan this past week; Warden Robinson..
topped the list of 30 competitors at the match: •
Organizers of the special event divided the com-
petitors into two groups: Of the 11. in. his group,
Warden Robinson plowed last; enabling him to keep
an eye on those going beforehand and learning from
their mistakes. •
In this competition, the wardens and regional
chairman were required - to drive a tractor. Mr.
. Robinson said he also took advantage of using a walk-
ing plow behind a horse. Although there wasn't any
prize for this, he was told his furrows looked the best.
Following the plowing, the special events •com
,petitors, including MPs; MPPs, were taken over the
Lucan community centre where- each participant -
received a mug and certificate.
At the' Sept, 30 session of Huron County Council;
Deputy Reeve Lionel Wilder announced that the
warden had received the silver plow for his efforts.
He was heartily applauded by council.

Legion launches branch
membership cap --._paid
BY NEIL SHAW
This week Goderich
Legion Branch 109 Member-
ship chairman Comrade
Rick Duckworth announced
that the membership cam-
paign has begun to renew
memberships in Branch 109
for 1983 and to recruit new
members. The goal of this
campaign is to increase the
total of all types of member-
ship in Legion Branch 109
from the 938 total member-
ship as of March 30, 1982 to a
grand total of 1000 members
by late next spring.
The 1983 Early Bird cam-
paign moved off the start
line on Monday, October 3,
although a number of
members have already paid
their 1983 dues: These Early
Birds will be eligible for the
monthly membership draw
for a free 1983 dues to be
drawn at the general
meetings held monthly until
the end of this year. Your
paid-up membership covers
the period from January 1 to
December 31 of each year.
Although a member is not of-
ficially inrrears until
March 31 of the following
year, payment of your
Legion dues before the end of
this year makes the task of
the hard-working member-
ship chairman much easier
and ensures that you do not
miss a single copy of the
Legion magazine or become
unpopular with the computer
at Dominion Command in
Ottawa. This is why all
memberships are processed
to give each Branch
membership chairman an
up-to-date nominal roll. The
computer at Dominion Com-
mand will be processing a
total of over 520,000 names of
membership renewals,
transfers, and new and
fallen comrades within the
next 12 months.
Why not climb into the nest
and be an Early Bird?
Branch 109 dues are $15 for
an ordinary member (ex -
serviceman) and $15 for an
associate member ° (son or
daughter of a veteran).
Some of the other Branches
in the District have increas-
ed their dues by $2 to $3 we
note in their bi-monthly
bulletins, but not branch 109,
Fraternal members do not
pay their dues until the
month of January 1983.
Fraternal membership .in
Branch 109 is $20. All frater-
nal memberships are
reviewed by the member-
ship comnnittee at the end of
the year and those who have
not contributed to the ac-
tivities of the Branch may be
cancelled.
Members who pay their
annual dues each year on a
continuous basis will, as
time passes, receive at the
annual Honours and Awards
Night in early March, a lapel
pin indicating in five year.in-
tervals the number of years
the member has been a
member of the Royal Cana-
dian Legion.
At the Dominion conven-
tion held last June in Quebec
City, Legion membership
was extended to include
spouses, widows and
widowers of members of the
Royal Canadian Legion.
Note that spouses, widows
and widowers of ex -service
personnel who are not paid
up members of the Legion
are not eligible under this
category of membership. No
decision has been made on
commonlaw spouses of
Legion members as of this
date.
Branch 109 dues may- be
paid at the canteen or by
mail by enclosing your dues
cheque payable to Goderich
Legion Branch 109 and your
1982 membership card to
how your computer
membership number as the
computer print-out uses only
initials, and not full names
so that the membership
chairman must verify your
renewal by your number as
well as your name. Address
your renewal to the
Secretary of Goderich
Legion Br. 109, 56 Stanley
St., Goderich.
Not only are any ex -
service personnel of World
Wars I and II and their sons
or daughters eligible to join
the Legion as ordinary or,
associate members respec-
tively but other membership
categories exist as well.
Reference to the general
bylaws of the Royal Cana-
dian Legion indicate that the
types of service are eligible
to join the Legion as an or-
dinary member (often refer-
red to as a regular member).
As of today, any one with
Canadian citizenship who
served in the underground of
an occupied nation (Holland
or France for example) may
join the Legion, as an or-
dinary member. Other types
of eligibility for ordinary
membership are Post War
Service in the (1) Canadian
Forces including, Women's
Forces; (2) N.R.M.A. Per-
sonnel; (3) all personnel on
the completion of two years
service in the Canadian
Armed Forces Reserve or
Militia; (4) Service in the
Korean War; (5) Service in
the USA or British. (regular
or Reserve) Forces or any of
the Commonwealth nations;
(6) After two years in the
RCMP; (7) Commissioned
Officers on the Cadet In-
structors' List after two
years whether or not still
serving; (8) O.T.C. trainees
after two years of service;
and (9) graduates of the
Regular Forces Training
Plan.
If you know anyone who
fits one of these categories,.
contact the Branch member-
ship chairman at 4.8681, The
Branch President or the
Branch Secretary at 4-9255.
The membership chair-
man will be in the Legion
Hall following the parade
and service on November 11
to allow all members to per-
sonally renew their .1982
membership in Branch 109
for 1983. With the full co-.
operation of the membership
of Branch 109 in the payment
. of their dues and the recruit-
ment of veterans, still net as
yet Legion members, the
Branch shall attain its goal
of 1000 members by•March
31,1983.
