The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-09-29, Page 5Trustee is retiring in Nov. Dear Editor, To the Ratepayers of the Townships of Ashfield and West Wawanosh: This letter is to inform the public that I am retiring this November from the Huron County Board of Education and to let the electorate know there is an opening for a trustee in the November- 8 election. If you : are deeply in- terested in the education of our children and young peo- ple; enjoy • public relations work; and most important, have a "mightysharppen- cil", then think about this challenging and rewarding position. I have stored in my home all of my minutes and agen- das since 1969 and would be pleased to lend them out to anyone who is interested -in knowing what this position entails. Give me a call at 529-' 7350. The number of meetings a month is from a minimum of two to a maximum of four to five, depending upon the LETTERS standing committee a board member serves. However, in my opinion, board meetings are only a part of the duty of a board member and the most rewarding part of the job is public relations. To know what is happening in our schools, attendance at the following is very wor- thwhile: - visits to the classrooms (a phone call to the principal first); - Professional Develop- ment Day (twoayear); - principals' seminars ( when board members are invited) ; - science fairs in various schools; - public speaking contests; - drama club presenta- tions, choirs and band con- certs in the high schools; - teacher -parent nights at public schools; - staff meetings in various schools; - curriculum presentations at the board office; - tours of the various schools; school concerts - Brookside and GoldeCi cle; = - .,nd the highlight of the school year - Grade 8 graduation at Brookside ,and Commencement Exercises at F.E. Madill Secondary School and Goderich District Collegiate Institute. I would like to take this op- portunity to thank the public for their support during the past 16 years. Tower inadequate.. • from page 4 and jobs to be in continual jeopardy. We also believe that it is in the best interests 'of the town at large to give the project the priority it deserves. We just don't have nearly enough available water for our safety. In a similar vein you talk about the "tower project". Again let the record show that we have opted for (years ago) an in -ground storage facility because it is much less expensive than a new tower. The present tower will last another 20 years according to respected engineers, and will serve perfectly well as a pressure head. In conclusion -two years ago we acquired a desk and chair for the press, on the assumption that the Sincerely, Marian Zinn ratepayers might be in- terested in seeing the P.U.C. at work on a continuing basis. To date that chair has never been warmed. Maybe that says it all. Yours truly, Goderich Public Utilities Commission, Dr. J.H. Peters, Vice -Chairman. Mrs. William G. (Alma) MacEwan, an active life- long resident of Goderich, celebrated her 95th birthday last Thursday with a tea party in the afternoon for friends and a family dgriner in the evening. 11 Mrs. MacEwan was born on a farm in Colborne Township, about one mile. from Saltford, on September 23, 1887 to Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Goldthorpe. She was married to William G. MacEwan at St. George's Anglican Church in 1916. They were married at 6 a.m. so they could catch the early GTR train from Goderich for a wedding trip to Chicago and Winnipeg. A horse and carriage was sent from Polley's Livery Stable to the church to take them to the station. The late Mr. MacEwan worked as a coal dealer. Mrs. MacEwan has two daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Helen) McManus of Goderich and Mrs. Donald (Kathleen) Mason of Lon- don. She also has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. And she has two sisters, Miss Olive J. Goldthorpe who lives in Torbnto and Mrs. D.A. McCarten who lives in Museum move would be error Dear Editor, Huron County Council is considering moving the Huron County Pioneer Museum from its present Goderich location to Vanastra. Thinly carefully before move I feel this would be a grave error. The museum is ' a • beloved historic landmark to site its present deficiencies -couldha corrected. Dear Editor, r War- o' express my .- concern over the proposal of Huron County Council to move the Pioneer Museum to Vanastra. Of course I do not want to lose the Museum as a badly' needed tourist attraction for Goderich but beyond that surely the prime purpose of keeping a museum is to • expose its contents to the largest possih'e number of visitors for their education and enjoyment. This .will not occur at Vanastra. If the money which County Council proposes to spend on the purchase and upgrading of the Vanastra building, not , to mention on the mind- boggling operation of mov- ing all the artifacts - which ° include a steam locomotive - were applied to the present My other concern relates to the preservation of the old Central School building which forms the nucleus of the museum. Nomention has been made of its probable fate but one can suppose that it would be torn down and the lots on which it stands sold. That would •be a tragedy. That old school is an ex- tremely rare example in Canada of a building in the Elizabethan style. I would urge your readers to look closely at the architectural description included in the Town of Goderich's ad- vertisement "Intention to Designate Heritage Buildings" running currently in the Signal -Star and then to try • to imagine the appearance of North ALL STAR TOURS PIONEERS OF ESCORTED MOTOR COACH TOURS "OUR BUSINESS IS GOING PLACES" All star Tours " ...• Z _2Ot i.A.N.NtVERE A&x OFFER - SAVE $$$ ON EARLY BOOKING .5% DISCOUNT MAX. •50.00 Per Person CALIFORNIA - 23 Days Feb. 19 . Now that jail attracts more than 15,000 visitors each year. The stone walls, windows, cupola and the interior o( jail and house have been restored. to a condition where they will need no more structural repair for another 100 years. The total cost to the county has been the provision of a new roof. Huron County. Council should think very carefully before it. proceeds to move its museum. We, in Goderich, care about our treasures. Sincerely, Dorothy Wallace all Goderich and area --citizens that could not easily -- be relinquished.. The move to Vanastra could well be the beginning of the end for the museum. Vanastra is an out- of-the-way spot with little to offer tourists. Previous attempts to revitalize the, area have met with less than notable success.. Goderich, on the . other hand is a tourist town which draws visitors to its port, beaches, atmosphere and attractions such as the 'jail, mine, and museum. Moving, the museum will be a blow to Goderich tourism, and will greatly decrease museum attendance. This proposed move was so obviously ludicrous that I investigated to. see why a .;move WAS being considered. County Council is very afraid of the threat of fire at the • present location. The building is old, wooden and would burn like tinder. A fund was started, to replace the entire building. which is presently 45,000 square feet. However, when the Ministry was -contacted regarding reconstruction they said that an area of 00,000 square feet was, needed _....to_._. properly: display the artifacts in the collection. This would cost approximately $4 million, and such a structure would not fit on the present lot. The former radar • school .in Vanastra seemed to be an alternative site, as for ap- proximately $1 million, a fireproof building for the museum could be obtained. I understand that financial arguements like this are convincing,- but surely another avenue could be explored. Is there no hope of the existing facilities being improved? .Y. __ .The... roots -of -,the museuix- go deep into the Huron County soil where it exists and will not. be ripped out • callously, nor easily!
