official opening of
Goderich squash club set
The Goderieh Squash Club
has announced its official
opening is set for Saturday,
September 25 at 1:30'p.m. in
the Goderich Mini -
Community Centre on Cam-
bridge Street.
The opening of the new
squash facility represents
the culmination of months of
planning and preparation on
the part of many individuals
who wanted to bring the
game to town. The only
feasible method of introduc-
ing the game was to pursue
the prospect of a portable,
collapsable court, that could
be stored and set up easily.
The 21 by 32 foot portable
court was installed in the
gymnasium of ` the mini -
community centre last week
and is available on weekdays
from 6.30 to 8.30 a.m. and
3.30 to 11 p.m. weeknights
with the exception of Tues-
day. On weekends the court
is available from 6.30 a.m. to
11 p.m.
The Goderich Squash Club
is offering annual member-
ships 'at a cost of $175 per
year and $300 per couple.
Pay as you play vouchers
will also be available at
barb and Gear for anyone
wishing to try out the new
sport.
Many activities will be of-
fered at the club's opening
Saturday, including a video
presentation on the game of
squash and an exhibition
game between Sandy Pen-
ney, London Squash Club
professional and Larry
Waite, the 1981-82 under -16
All -Canadian Soft -Ball
Champion. Penney and
Waite will also offer a
demonstration on the basic
rules, services and shots.
Lake Huron Zone Recrea-
tion Association fitness co-
ordinator, Doug Lafreniere
will be on hand to offer some
fitness and warmup tips to
players.
The Goderich Squash Club
privately raised the $20,000
for the purchase of the por-
table court and the club now
boasts a- membership of 35.
The contact person for the
club is Don Longwell.
United B soccerteam beats
Simcoe 1-0 in grudge match
BY FRED
SCHOEMAKER
Sunday afternoon was
sunny but not hot as the
Goderich United B soccer
team met the Simcoe Lusos
team in a grudge match.
The Simcoe team had
previously beaten -the Bs in
Simcoe 5-4 but Sunday's
game was different as the Bs
won 1-0.
In the first half, the Bs
penetrated Simcoe's loose
play but never scored. The
half ended in a 0-0 tie. In the
second half, the play was on
the right side. Roger Lewis,
an outstanding halfback,
crossed the ball over to Mike
(Woody) Wedlock who then
passed between the, two
fullbacks. Randy Stoddart,
the player who always
comes up with the big goal,
then chipped it over the
sprawling Simcoe
goaltender. This goal, of
course, proved to be the
game winner.
The whole B team played
hard, tough and fast in this
game.
Saturday, September 11
the Bs lost against the
Poachers 3-1.
The Bs' record now stands
at. 10 wins, four losses and
three ties. The next game
will be in Glencoe on Sunday.
