Pork barbecue supper raises
funds for Knox restoration
As the Women of Knox
served a pork barbecue sup-
per to more than 200 people
inside the Presbyterian
church Wednesday, work on
-the outside of the'"bVilding
was well underway as
evidenced by elaborate scaf-
folding.
The barbecue was one of
several fund-raising events
planned by various groups in
the church in support of its
building restoration.
A total of $200,000 will be
spent over the nest few
years to repair, the walls,
doors and windows of Knox.
This year $120,000 is being
spent on the walls. C.A.
McDowell -Ltd: of -Exeter is
repairing cracks in them
while insulating at the same
time by using the Sto system
with mechanical fastening, a
popular technique used in
Europe but not, too common
in North America yet.
Styrofoam board insulation
is lagged to the outside walls
and then covered with an
acrylic resin.
A door-to-door campaign •
of congregation members
held several months ago
brought - in - $190000•--- in
pledges by the end of 1984.
Since then an .auction sale, ,
car wash and bake sale have
all been held as fund-raising
projects. ''he, recent pork
barbecue brought' in
$1,164.74. A variety night is
planned for October by the
church choir. '
Retired bank manager dies
ALBERT ARTHUR
GARLAND
Albert Arthur Garland of
61 Essex Street, Goderich
died in Alexandra. Marine
and General Hospital,
Goderich on Thursday,
September 16 at the age of
68.
He was born in•Toronto on
October 22, 1913 to Sylvania
and Alice (Came) Garland.
He attended school in
Toronto and later worked as
a bank manager with
Toronto -Dominion Bank.
During World War II he
served in England as a
sergeant with a supplies
unit. He enlisted in 1942 and
was discharged at Toronto in
1945.
He married Elizabeth
(Betty) Little in Walkerville
on September 17, 1949.
Following their marriage,
they lived in Toronto, Sault
Ste: Marie, Windsor, New
York and Stratford before
. retiring_to Goderich:
The late Mr. Garland was
a •member of the Goderich
Rotary Club and St. George's
Anglican Church.

He is survived by his wife;
three sons, John of Kit-
chener, ' Gordon of Toronto
and Robert of Calgary; one
daughter, Elizabeth (Beth)
of London; two sisters, Mrs.
J.D. (W innif red) Bradford of
Toronto and Mrs. Charles
(Mabel) Ross of Goderich;
one. brother, Leslie of
Gabriola Island, .B.C.; and
four grandchildren.
The body of the late Mr.
Garland rested at Stiles
Funeral Home„ Goderich. A
funeral service was held at
St. . George's Anglican
•Church on Saturday, Sep-
tember 18 at 2 p.m. The
Reverend Robert J. Crocker
officiated.
Interment was in the
veterans' plot at Maitland
Cemetery, Goderich.
Pallbearers were Mike
Little, Eric Connery, Gord
Muir, Doug Bradford. Gordy
Jones, Don Garland, Roy
Samson and Doug Page.

Vera May Pridham of 10
Allenhurst Dr., Toronto, died
in Toronto General Hospital
on Wednesday, September 8.
She was the daughter of
Mr. and.Mrs. Harold Evans
of Toronto and the wife of
Edgar ridham.
She is survived by one
daughter; Beverly (Mrs.
Brent Anderson) of London;
one son, Stephen of Toronto
and one brother, Kenneth
Evans of Stouffville. She is
also survived by two
grandchildren.
