Eleanor Davis to speak
Toughlove will be topic at Maitland
Toughlove, a support
group for parents of
adolescents with behavior
problems, will be the subject
at the Maitland Country Club -
here on Wednesday, Sep-
tember 22 at 8 p.m. when the
ladies' curling group
sponsors guest speaker
Eleanor Davis of Toughlove
(London).
Some young people do not
respond to tender loving care
from parents, teachers,
guidance counsellors or
other concerned adults.
Aware of this from events in
their own home, Penn-
sylvania counsellors Phyllis
and David York a few years
ago formed a group which
'calls upon parents of
adolescents engaging in
unacceptable behavior to
draw- a hard,' firm line,
saying, "Beyond this point
your conduct is not ac-
ceptable to me or to society.
I will no longer tolerate your
misbehaviour nor protect
you from its ..consequences.
You must bear responsibility
for the actions you choose. I
love you, but if you want my
affection, you must earn it."
This is hard medecine for
parents to take and give.
Their emotions -guilt, fear,
shame, disappointment,
hurt, dislike, hope -are likely
to be powerful and confused.
The Yorks realized that
parents wishing to make a
constructive change .in their
teenagers' behaviour need
support from other parents
to do what they know is
necessary. The name chosen
for this support network is
apt: Toughlove. The
organization now has about
50,000 people on its mailing
list.
The appearence of Jeri
and Tom Elliott on Wayne
McLean's radio talk show
last fall led to the setting up
of a Toughlove group in
London. Respectively a
professor of social work and
a high school counsellor, the
Elliotts established
Toughlove in Canada. Their
description of the program
on CFPL Radio led Londoner
Eleanor Davis to appeal to
Lord Roberts School for a
room for an organizational
meeting in December.
Seventy to 80 people showed
up, a demonstration of need
which "shocked" Davis.
Shortly after, the Elliotts
visited the city to explain
Toughlove.
Parents belonging to
Toughlove (London) now
meet Tuesday evenings
under the leadership of
Davis and Diane Smith. A
self-help manual by the
Yorks showsa parent how to
identify the nature and
extent of a young person's
behaviour crisis -and the
quite separate crisis this
creates in a parent. A parent
is directed how to take a
stand on the limits of ac-
ceptable behaviour while a
youngster lives at home -in
short, how to exercise good
old-fashioned discipline.
The evening with Davis on
the topic of Toughlove'at the
Maitland Country Club here
on the 22nd will cost you $2.
Proceeds from the event will
be used by the ladies' curling
group to help provide
equipment for junior curlers.
