She and three other paper tole artists plan to have about 100 completed pictures for sale at Colborne Township's 17th annual Christmas Country Fair in October. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan Stunt men will perform Ever wondered how Hollywood creates those spectacular stunts for movies and television? It isn't the stars of the show who risk life and limb when the scent' calls for a flaming leap from a high building, or a bone -smashing drive off a cliff! Highly-experienceti and' courageous Hollywood stunt men act as stand-ins for those dangerous scenes, and the afternoon grandstand at Western Fair will present. two of the finest on the conti- nent in action for fair au- diences. Joe Gilbride, whose film credits include "BJ and the Bear", "Fantasy Island"; "Strike Force", "Death Wish II" and "The Fall Guy", has doubled for such stars as Ricardo Montalban, Charles Bronson and Lee Majors. He'll try just about anything — crashing cars,\ falling from multi-storey buildings and performing flying leaps engulfed in • flames. Benny Koske's act is a blast! The "Human Bomb" "packs himself into a wooden coffin with five charges of dynamite — enough to ex- plode a one -ton safe — and , throws the switch. His only protection is a helmet and a fireproof suit. Benny has blown himself up at major fairs and exhibitions across North America and perform- rsit: BAILEY Real Estate Ltd. Teachers' Day will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. These days, will offer all teachers an, opportunity to observe. and participate in the museum's educational programs: Students will be able to gain an understanding of the development of agriculture and rural life in the pro- vince, from the pioneer period to the present day. The museum has more than 20 buildings, including display barns, a crossroads community, two historic farmsteads, church, weaver's cottage and much tnore. It is an excellent ex- perience for students to ap- preciate how we have evolv- ed socially, agriculturally and industrially to the 1980s. Teachers will be admitted free of charge on these days and are welcome to tour the 80 acre site' on their own. Guided tours which focus on the school programs will be conducted throughout the day. Teachers' Day is an ideal time to visit the Ontario Agricultural Museum and discover the educational and entertaining value of the museum. The museum is located five km west of Milton, just south of Highway 401, next to the Kelso Conservation Area. BY JOANNE BUCHANAN • - • Paper tole, the art of taking a picture or print and making it look three dimensional, will be the featured new craft at Colborne Township's ,17th annual Christmas . Country Fair this October. Tammy Affleck of Goderich, along with three other paper tole artists, plan to have about 100 completed pictures (framed or on plaques) ready to sell at the fair,. They will range in price from $7 up to $300 for the most elaboratepieces. Tammy says she had to enlist the help of the three other artists because paper tole is very time-consuming and she knew she would never be able to stock the booth by herself in one year. According to Tammy, paper tole is not difficult to learn but it is an art that must be learned from another person as there are few, if any, instruction books on the subject. Tammy herself took a course and has been doing paper tole for about five years now. Last year she taught her own course in the craft at Goderich night school. "Paper tole is oneof my favorite crafts," she says. "I find it really relaxing." This statement comes from someone who knows how to do a whole variety of crafts, including silk flower making, cake decorating, needlepoint and ceramics to name a few. She has taught night school in various crafts in both Goderlch and Harrow, Ontario where her parents own a craft and hobby shop. "It takes students 10 weeks at two hours a week to do three paper tole pictures and they keep learning more with each picture. They work from patterns which makes It easier for them," Tammy explains. In the art of paper tole, you start with a regular print or picture of anything as your background. Next you cut pieces out of this picture and color the edges with a marker se that no white shows. You then shape the pieces with a modelling spoon and build them up with silicone, a quick drying adhesive. "The most difficult part of paper tole is learning to look at a picture and in your mind, make it three dimensional,". says Tammy. "With the patterns that the students use, they don't have to do this. They are shown exactly what pieces to cut out and then the cutting, coloring, shaping and building come easy. It's when you work without a pattern, that it becomes more difficult because you have to decide in your own mind what pieces to cut out and how much to build each one up." Tammy says there is not much money involved for paper tole materials. The expense comes with mounting and .framing your completed picture. Egg prices the same • The Capadian Marketing Agency announc- ed in Ottawa recently that the farm price for Grade A Large eggs will remain at August levels through September. "Drops in feed, interest rates and adjustments for shortfall, were not enough. to trigger a decline in the pro- ducer price for September," stated Jean ~ Brassard, CEMA General Manager. "These cost reductions were offset by increased labor rates in most provinces, and an increase in the conversion to Grade A Large." u The conversion factor is used to adjust the price pro- ducers receive, from nest run eggs to Grade A Large eggs. "Consumers can still find excellent value for their dollar in eggs. Producer prices are actually up to two cents lower this September than last;" Brassard con- tinued. "This shows, again how Canada's egg farmers. have been acting with restraint for years." Tammy, who hes been doing crafts for a number of years, says she guesses she picked up a lot of knowledge working in her parents' shop part-time throughout her school years. Teaching crafts eight, hours a week at night school on top of a full- time job now keeps her busy. However, the Christmas Country Fair is her first craft show. "I've never wanted to sell my pictures before. After you put so much work into them, you hate to part with them. But it's different now because with each picture I do, I just keep in mind that it is for sale at the fair and it doesn't bother me so much. I'm looking forward to it," she says. CEMA sets egg prices at the start of each month using a cost of production• formula. The formula measures changes in the costs of pro- ducing a dozen Grade A Large eggs on farms in Canada. A,s'costs change, the price producers receive also changes- up.or down. The cost of production for- mula is currently being ex- amined by a Panel of Inquiry of the National Farm Pro- ducts' ro- ducts' Marketing Council. The Report of the Inquiry is expected in mid-October. CEMA sets the farmgate price for eggs. The final price paid by consumers is determined by retailers and wholesalers. It is up to them to maintain August price levels.
