The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-09-08, Page 7Christmas Country Fair grows into first class show
What is the Christmas
Country Fair, you a§k, and I
can best explain it by saying
that in 1965 a group of ladies
from Colporne . Township,
with Mrs. Wilmer Hardy as
their leader and with a
purpose "to promote
Colborne Township people",
decided to have a fair as a
means of showing and selling
their crafts to the public.
They held the first fair in
Colborne Township Hall at
Carlow, but in a' few years
found the displays and the
crowd had increased to the
point where they needed
more space. They then
moved to Saltford Valley
Hall. Even now, the fair has
grown to the extent that
space does not always allow
sufficient viewing.
When the ladies started,
they displayed and sold
crafts such as weaving,
knitting, croKbeting, sewing
or embreidEry of ;various
kinds, twine mats, leather
work, painting, quilts, dried

floral arrangements,, can-
dles, various gift articles'
along with delicious
homemade baking,
preserves, honey, apples and
gardenvegetables.
Through the years,new
crafts have been added of
various kinds and the list of,
regular crafts has increased
to pine furniture, ironware,
pottery, jewelry, toys, etc.
This year the fair is
featuring some new crafts
such as: TOLE ART - In late
1700, French priests made
their household items in the
summer, then painted them
in the winter. Paints were
made from the earth. TOLE
is the French word for tin.
Jane Moore of Blenheim
does painting on tin and
wooden pieces made by her
husband, Tony; PAPER
TOLE - The craft of taping a
picture and making it three
dimensional, Mrs. Tammy
Affleck, Widder Street,
Goderich: MARQUETRY' -
The craft where 35 different
woods are cut in various
shapes and glued on a walnut
plaque. Rejianne Favreau of
Clem-Rej Craft, Nelson
Street, Sarnia learned to do
the craft from her father in
Quebec; and CHOCOLATE
NOVELTIES - Such as

4=H News
At 7:30 p.m. on Monday,
August 30 the Dungannon 4-H
Calf Club, members and
leaders met at the
Dungannon fairgrounds for
their annual fun night. Since
the fun night was to be held
Sunday night (and cancelled
because off rain) and exam
night was Monday night,
they were combined.
Baseball was played from
7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Members
then entered the hall where
the exam was written on
lessons handed out during
the 4-H meetings and general
4-H information learned
during the club year.
An election was then taken
for the citizenship award and
topics picked for an essay
written by club members for
a scholarship award.
Members then enjoyed hot
dogs, pop and ice cream
which provided a very
relaxing time for all and a
climax to this 4-H term.

VALUE TODAY FOR A HEALTHY TOMORROW
PET SITTING SERVICE
The convenience of someone
looking after your pet. in
your own home, andtha$
means any pet.
Just one year from its introduc-
tion, the Mazda GLC became one of
the top selling cars in the world.
And with good reason. People
around the world recognized its
outstanding combination of value,
engineering, quality construction
and overall economical operation.
On value alone the GLC rates
serious consideration. Even the
lowest priced model is standard,
equipped with full tinted glass, a
remote control driver's mirror,
fully reclining' front bucket seats,
electric rear window defroster,
lockable fuel filler lid and much
more. Plus there's a Decor model
that surrounds you with luxury
appointments, and a Sport model
that gives you mag wheels, a
sunroof, special "sport" suspen-
sion, hill instrumentation and
much more. In short, you. get a lot
of car for your money, no metkr
how little ou pay.
GLC engineering id state of the
art from its compact external
dimensions to its surprisingly
generous interior, The overhead
cam engine provides an ideal
compromise, between performance
and fuel economy. The unique
Mazda -designed front wheel drive
system provides precise, nimble
steering with minimal torque
steer. Many of the engineering
features on the GLC are ones you'll
never see, but you'll quickly ap-
preciate them once you take the
wheel.
Something you can see is the
way Mazda puts the GLC together.
The workmanship is superb. Body
seams and doors fit together
precisely. The finish is 'equal to
that of a car costing far more. And
Inside you'll find the same atten-
tion to detail in the upholstery and
trim fittings.
Mazda GLC. The things that have
made it one of the most popular
cars in the world are the same
things that will make if a hit with
you. See and drive it at your Maz-
da dealers.
