BY THE REVEREND
ROBERT J.CROCKER,
RECTOR, ST. GEORGE'S
ANGLICAN CHURCH
It's really amazing how
everything seems to depend
on everything else. Goderich
depends on industry, in-
dustry depends on natural
resources and labour, and so
on.
I've been reading a very
interesting book about
nature, and hew everything
in nature is related to a
multitude of other things.
The large ' meat .eating
animals depend on the food
provided by the usually
smaller plant -eating
animals, which in turn de-
pend , on vegetation which
depends on the climate and
rainfall, which depend on so
many geographic details.
And all the insects, rodents,
our planning, is,to omit one
little consideration and it
could be final and fatal.
There was a time when
most thinking and planning
had behind it a basic
assumption: God. Perhaps
He was described differently
at various times: sometimes
as a slightly more than
human being, sometimes as
a philosophical idea, ' but
always present. Some think
we have outgrown such no-
tions, so that there is little
left of awe or wonder, of
beauty or love, of grace and
humanity amid all the
statistics and computing.
For such people, God is
dead. But maybe you are
keeping. Him as a basic
assumption. Perhaps you
feel as I do, that He is the one
consideration we are in
danger of losing. For me, He
keeps the rest in
perspective, and that makes
Him very important. What
do you think?
seeds, lakes, trees, and of
course, man the great
disturber,_iit _.intro, .patterns-.
governed by natural laws
and systems that humans
are . slowly learning to
understand and . sometimes
to control. The marvel of it
all, to me, is that nothing ex-
ists or -.can exist in isolation
for very long:
At the moment with the
current economic problems, •
we are learning. how : much
we depend on other people:
When one group. ceases to
function, nothing quite takes
' its place. We have adjusted
our whole way of life to pat-
terns that can be changed
only very gradually over a
period of years, without
causing hardship.
Mankind tries to interfere
with nature sometimes, and
in disrupting the balances,
changes the whole face of a
'continent. No waqnder 'that
whole species become ex-
tinct. Some people tell us
that man can't interfere with
too much more without the
danger of becoming extinct
himself - at least kit's a
possibility. They tell Us too,
that men tend to take too
much on themselves, as if
human calculations were
bound to succeed in the long
run. We forget that a chain
reaction could end in the
snuffing out of all life as we
know it. All we have to do, in
