A 1982 graduate of GDCI,
Paul has recently returned
as the only Canadian
member of a United States
sponsored, good -will tour of
•
Europe by senior American
high school students with the
Blue Lake Michigan
Instrumental Program. The
band gave many concerts
throughout Europe, playing
to audiences of as many as
6,000. They received stan-
ding ovations wherever they
gave concerts and were' iell
received by individuals
wherever they went. One of
the highlights of the tour was
a command performance
given for the Princess of the
Netherlands where, after the
concert, they were en-
tertained at a reception and
each member of the band
was individually introduced
to the Princess. They were
given full police escorts into
some of the cities and official
welcome by the burger-
meister and his council.
Most places presented each
band member with gifts to
show their appreciation of
the visit. At all concerts,
Paul was introduced as the
CANADIAN with the group.
Paul would like to thank
Jack Ridell, M.P.P. Huron -
Middlesex and his staff,
Murray Cardiff, M.P. Huron -
Bruce, Bruce McCaffrey,
Minister of Citizenship and
Culture and the Goderich
Tourist Committee for their
assistance in supplying
Ontario and Canadian pins,
flags, folders and souvenirs
for him to distribute in
Europe.
OPP urge safety
Everyone ,involved in the
business of public safety is
concerned about the dumber
of preventable tragedies that.
occur on highways on holi-
day weekends.
Ontario Provincial Police
Commissioner Jim Erskine
is making a personal appeal
to all drivers who venture
onto the highways this Labor
Day weekend.
"Make a special effort to
think safety," says Comm.
Erskine. "We all need to. re-
mind ourselves about driv-
ing „ defensively, staying
alert and the fact that
alcohol and driving can spell
death or serious injuries to
ourselves and loved ones."
"Driving in heavy traffic
demands discipline, skill and
complete attention to con-
trolling . your vehicle," he
says. ,
"If drivers would take a
moment to consider the
responsibility they accept
before starting the engine of
their vehicle, that burden
would serve as a constant
reminder," Comm. Erskine
concludes.
Please join" all O.P.P. of-
ficers in working together to
prevent accidents.
