The Goderich Signal-Star, 1982-09-01, Page 5Instjtute prize winnerstilvalues water color Dear Editor, In reading the Women's Institute history [review in the Signal -Star of August 18, I noted that the Institute gave prizes to Grade 8. I was the recipient of that prize in 1926. On the En- trance Exams, I had the highest marks in the area in history, geography and com- position but I could only receive one prize. The In- . stitute decided I should have a better prize than they usually gave. I received a water colour, "The Meadows" by Gozzard, pur- chased at Smith's Art Store. It is a beautiful picture ETTERS mounted in gold matting and frame. " It has always held a promi- nent place in our living room; my mother's house on Bruce Street, Goderich from 1926 to 1947, then at Jarona Farms, Mahon from 1947 to 1970, then Princess Anne Crescent, Islington from 1970 to 1979. It now hangs in my daughter's diningroom in St: Marys. About four years ago I had an art dealer tell me it is a very valuable painting. It certainly has been that for Me. • I thought the Institute would like to know, one of their prizes wasn't put in a dusty closet and forgotten. Yours truly, Margaret Huston See, Islington, Ontario. (Bluewater Centre Staff Photo ) Western Night at the Livery Theatre is success despite weather What does it take to lure a man out of retirement after seven years? It takes a worthy cause and some enthusiastic prodding.. The worthy cause was 'Western Nite' at •The Livery. The enthusiastic prodding was provided by members and friends of the Goderich, Arts Foundation. The man asked to come out of •:retirement was Elgin Fisher. Elgin's band wasa popular headliner at the Commercial Hotel in Seaforth for several years: Persuading him to gather his group together for Saturday night proved a delight to many people. With only one hour's rehear 1, he was back in the ' g of things. Western Nite happened m spades in spite of inclement weather. A flurry of activity and some ingenuity turned the adjacent building into a barn dance'setting. Elgin and his band (Bruce Ryan, Francis Schram and Audrey Kerr) played for the majority of the evening. They called on Ebb and Bill Ross' and Sam Wain to embellish a \ few numbers. Bev Ryan and Gary Ross also answered the call by coming out of the audience to 'sing a couple of songs. Intervals of blue grass musie. by • -Brian Aiaslie's Shane's Creek provided a change of pace. This band is relatively newand hopefully .we'll be hearing from them a lot in the future. The members are Brian Ainslie, Fred James, Brian Petrie, Rick Milburn and Mike Reynolds. There wasno lull in the entertainment. Gard. Harrison expertly tickled the ivories, accompanied by Frances Schram on guitar 'for a few numbers of `.slow dancin'. Ernie t as M.C. made, sure everything rolled along smoothly. He, Fordyce Clark and Sam Mcllwain all did admirable jobs of calling square dances. All of these talented people donated their services. The only pay they received was the delight of the audience who showed ' their ' ap- Predation with a lot of high Jasper speaks Tom Jasper spoke to his fellow Rotarians about at- tendance when the Goderich Rotary Club met at the Bedford Hotel at noon Tuesday.
