Bryan W. Pritchard, a
professional puppeteer
turned accountant turned
lawyer turned author, paid a
visit to Goderich last
Thursday on a cross -Canada
tour to promote his first -
published book, The
Hathaway Decision, but
inore importantly, to open
the -public's eyes to the in-
creasing number of child
abuse cases in this country.
The Hathaway Decision
deals with a fictional child
abuse court case (see !Crib
Svela's review) based on
•
on tour to promote his book
Pritchard's eight yearsot
experience as a Calgary
lawyer lathe family field.
"I've handled a lot of child
abuse cases and I've become
increasingly concerned
about violence in the home.
Since people don't want to
hear about the gory details, I
have tried to get my
messageacross in the book
in a light, entertaining way,"
he explains.
He says he is trying to visit
mostly small rural com-
munities on his slit -month
100 -stop tour because he
feels that child abuse is
really on the increase in

Pritchard explains that the
hideous child abuse cases
that people read about in
newspapers are not the
DOM
"In 99 Carses out of 100,
child abuse is not a
deliberate thing. It is often
just parents acting out of
frustration or from stress.
There is a very fine line
between disdplining and
child abuse," he says.
He says the legal and
social agency systems are
not working. He feels that
the community must get
„involved and he advocates
parenting education for
young people. '
"There are Block Parent
programsto protect children
from harmful outside
situations but what about
programs to protect children
from harmful situations
right inside their own
homes," he asks.
A father of three who
believes in positive rein-
forcement rather than
spanking, Pritchard admits
he may be idealistic in his
views but feels something
must be done.
He claims that an author
has two responsibilities; one
is to entertain and the other
is todeliver a message. In
The Hathaway Decision, the
whole concept of child abuse
is explored in an en-
tertaining yet thought-
provoking way,
Although The Hathaway
Decision is • his first
published book, it is actually
the third one he has written.
His first book, No. 6 Postern
Terrace. will be released in
SePtember. It deals with
psychic phenomena. His
second book, a novella en-
titled, The Convoluted
Dance, will be released in
April. It contrasts the b) -
sights of a professional con
artist with the un-
professional con games that
go on in everydaylife.
The underlying theme of
all three .of his books, he
says, is the integrity of the
indlvidual.
Pritchard is an interesting
individual himself. His life
has been a continuous
process of overcoming ob-
stacles. Born with a club
foot, he spent his first years
in and out of hospitals for
corrective surgery. He then
developed a stutter.
A speech therapist in
England, where Pritchard
was born in 1938, helped him
overcome his stuttering
through the use of hand
puppets. Pritchard became
so adept with the puppets
that he became England's
youngest professional
puppeteer at the age of 12.
His father died when he was
young and Pritchard went on
to support his mother and
younger sister with his
earnings from Punch -and-
• Judy shows.
With only a basic Grade 7
education, he slowly worked
his way up. He emigrated to
Canada in 1957 and obtained
a position as a teller with a
trust company. During the
next nine years he graduated
from, the Trust Companies
Course at Queen's Univer-
sity and earned the
professional designation
A.C.I.S. In 1969 he enrolled
as a mature student at the
University of Winnipeg and
l; A
after one year ,of un-
dergraduate studies, was
accepted into Abe faculty of
Universitir of Manitoba,
from which he graduatedln
1973. He presently lives half
the year in Hawaii and half
the year in Ottawa.
Even though he says he
has not had a pay cheque in
two years (he is living off his
savings), he is not sorry
/about his decision to become
an author.
"I've always had a
yearning to write and I didn't
want to look back on my life
and feel sorry that I had
never tried it," he explains.
Presently, Pritchard is
negotiating with two
American publishing
companies and a movie
company. He has been in
contact with 87 newspapers,
125 radio stations and 42 t.v.
stations across Canada with
favorable responses. He has
been taped for Global News
and Canada AM and will
appear on Take 30 in Sep-
tember.
If his book sales don't
generate him an income by
the end of his cross -Canada
promotional tour next
month, he may have to turn
to another profession or
return to legal work. But he
isn't afraid of the challenge,
saying, "It's much easier to
take a stand in life and
defend it against all odds
than be fluid and dynamic."

Novel deals with child abuse
BY KRIS SVELA
The devastation and
tragedy of a child abuse case
coupled with the intrigues of
the subsequent court
proceedings are the two
ingredients in Bryan W.
Pritchard's new thriller The
Hathaway Decision.,
Interwoven in this scenario
is a struggle for power and
Wealth.
At the centre is Carol
•Simpson, a young women
lawyer, attempting to
reunite the child with her
mother. She nag her inex-
perience against the cour-
troom maneuvering of
prosecutor, Doug Maguire.
Pritchard, a former
lawyer, lends his expertise to
the courtroom battles bet-
ween the two lawyers caught
up in a tug-of-war of
professional pride and deep
conviction.
The court case draws the
reader into the courtroom as
an observer of the tragedy
that is unfolding. Expert

swer delicate questions and
